Chapter Twenty-Four

"Stay here." Xander orders, shoving me into the arms of a guard. The guard, grabs my body roughly from him as if I were a toy. His hand gripping my upper arm so tight, I know there will be a bruise there later.

Anger boils under my skin. How dare he just hand me off like I'm nothing.

"You are not nothing." Xander's voice fills my head as his eyes flare, "You are the princess. You will not enter battle."

He can't leave me here. I don't care if I'm the princess or not.  "Let me help." I beg down the bond. I know I can handle whatever is waiting for us outside. I've trained hours for this. I came here for this. To help. To help fight. To help protect our kingdom. Becoming princess wasn't part of the plan and I'll be damned if I let it mess things up.

"We'll protect her." The guard grumbles, locking his other arm around me.

"No!" I attempt to shove the guard away but he had my arms held down, leaving me to use my power. I use the air to shove him away. His grunt almost silent in the chaos around us as his body shoved into the nearby wall. "I'm coming-"

"No." Xander shakes his head, grabbing my hand and attempting to drag me from the doors.

The doors I just saw Sam run out of... There's no way I wasn't getting out there.

"I can handle myself!" I pull my arm from his grasp. "Sam is out there too. I'm coming." I will not let her die out there.

He lets out a long breath through his nose, before looking out the doors. I could see the debate in his eyes. He has to let me come. I can't sit in this castle while the people I care about are out there risking their lives. I trained for a reason. I trained for this.

"Please." I beg, tears slipping past my eyes and wetting my cheeks. "I can't let her die out there." I would never forgive myself if something happened to her. He knows this. He knows how much she means to me. If I can prevent it, I will.

"Sage." He wraps his arms around my waist, pulling me to the side as more guards rush past.

"Xander, she's my best friend." I hold his stare. He's insane if he thinks I would ever just let Sam run out into a battlefield alone.

That's what's outside. A battlefield.

While everyone was spinning around that stone floor, we were getting attacked.

Constance warned me. She knew something wasn't right, but no one would listen to me. Not even Xander.

"I will make sure she's okay." He tries to assure me.

"That's not good enough for me." I attempt to step out his arms but they were chains locked around me.

"I can take her from here." A man speaks. My body freezes to its core. I know that voice. I've spent the last few weeks of my life hoping to never face that voice- that man, ever again.

"Thank you." Xander tells him, before attempting to hand me off again.

I look over, making eye contact with the man I never wanted to see.

"Hello Sage." Felix smiles at me, his face eerie similar to Cyrus. I had forgotten how much they looked alike. Those ice blue eyes piercing through my soul. My necklace feels like a weight and I silently cursed at myself for not taking it off before the ball. It didn't match my dress- I knew that, but I just couldn't do it. Felix holds out his hand to me and I inch back into Xander. "Nice to see you again."
