Chapter Thirty-Nine
Her door was burst open as a guard came running into her bedroom. "Get on the floor!" He yelled at her as he grabbed her upper arm and pulled her to the ground, not being careful to be soft.
Her body landed on the carpeted floor with a thud and the guard landed on top of her. "Stay quiet." He ordered in a low whisper.
Anya's blue eyes were frantic as she looked around the room, waiting for something to happen. All she could hear was her heart beating against her rib cage. There was no screaming, no shouting... no nothing. What was happening?
They were hidden behind her bed so she couldn't even see her bedroom door anymore. "What are you doing?" She hissed at the guard was doing a good job of keeping her on the floor.
"The prisoners have escaped."
What was that supposed to mean? Did he mean from downstairs, where Dimitri was? Or did he mean from Anceps? She knew that this demon Heinodis was supposed to be coming but she had been to see Dimitri since the funeral and when she asked him, he was sure that he wouldn't come. Not this early anyway.
She was scared, she didn't like not being able to hear anything. It put her on edge. "What prisoners?"
"The one who kidnapped you." He started. "And his dad."
Anya stalled, what did that mean? His dad? How was that possible, his dad was still in Anceps. Plus, from what she had heard his magic would have been long gone. Even forgetting all of the aforementioned, Dimitri didn't have his wand. She had it hidden away in her bedroom at the back of her wardrobe. She had argued with her father about that for a good, few hours.
"That isn't possible."
"Well I would start believing it soon. They are in the great hall and they are not letting your grandfather or grandmother out of that room. No one can get in and no one can get out, unless by some miracle they are just in there to have some afternoon tea I would start praying."
Dimitri would never kill them - she paused. That was why he came here! He came to murder who family. Oh shit, what has she done? She thought she could trust him, she thought that he had changed his mind. Where is her father? Her mother?
"Where is everybody else?" She cried frantically.
"Hopefully in the same position as you are. We just need to keep quiet and stay as low as we can."
"Are Sophie and Gretchen okay?" They would have been stood outside of her door so they would have seen all of the commotion that she had been oblivious to.
"They are down in servants hall. We don't think that the sorcerers are going to go after them so they should be safe. I do not have a lot of information right now, only that they managed to escape the jail with their magic and the one who kidnapped you has managed to knock out every guard between there and the Great Hall where the King and Queen were."
She couldn't believe this was happening. She didn't want to believe this was happening, how could she? Since they arrived at the palace, Dimitri had made her feel so guilty about thinking that he was capable of killing her family and yet now he was. It had to be a misunderstanding, surely?
The tears began to crawl down her pale, porcelain cheeks before she even noticed them. She could feel her heart breaking all over again. For her family, for Darya and for him. How could he do this to her?
With the one arm that was up past her chest, she wiped the tears away with the back of her hand.
"Can you take me to my parents please? If I am going to die, I want to die with them." She muttered as another torrent of tears poured down her face.
