Chapter Thirty-Eight
Dimitri gave his father a sour look. He did not want to hear whatever he was going to say right now. Everything he had just said to Anya he believed – or at least he wanted to. He cared deeply for her and he was not going to let his father ruin that.
"You have it bad." His father told him. "I mean, I thought you were always in love with Clarissa, or I mean at least fancied Maria. It is Maria isn't it?" He mused. Dimitri nodded his head. She was called Maria but he never loved her. She was good looking and it was fun to hang around with her but only for the benefits he received of hanging around with her. Plus, her brother was an ace sorcerer. Who was now dead.
Her brother was older than what Dimitri was by a good few years so when he died, he did not really know what to think. It did scare him but he only knew him when Dimitri went to the group meetings. He was in awe at him because he was meant to be the one to save them all.
It did not work out like that though and he ended up dead when his father was killed. He went after the demon but he was way too strong and he killed him on the spot. Maria and her mother were no way near the spot otherwise that would have been horrific. Dimitri knew that from experience.
As for Clarissa, he did love her. He just didn't love her. Besides, she liked girls more than he did so it would have been a fruitless operation trying to get her to fall in love with him.
"You know about Clarissa father," Dimitri sighed. "So, no, I did not love her and Maria was a bit of fun. Nothing else."
His father rolled his hollow eyes. "You could have any girl Dimitri. You are a handsome lad and you have the means to protect them. You do not need her, she is just a spoiled princess." Nikolai sneered on the word her. The way he was speaking about Anya was making Dimitri want to shout at his father! Why could he not just understand? Cold-blooded murder was never the option!
"Say it again, I dare you." Dimitri snapped, his green eyes in slits as he glared at his father. Anya was having a difficult time right now and he just wanted to have a few hours to himself because he needed to be emotionally strong for her. He did not need his father calling her – and being so ignorant in what he was calling her.
"Oh son," He exhaled. "Think of anyone but your damn self! We need to get our family and friends off of that island! We have both been gone more than a couple of days with only two sorcerers left to defend everyone. The only quick solution we have is to wipe the whole family out."
Dimitri shook his head. "The king is fair game but the rest of the family are off limits." He reiterated. "I will not argue with you on this."
Speaking to his father like this was making him uncomfortable. He had always looked up to his father, ever since he could remember – even when his father would not back down on letting Dimitri have fun during his practicing.
When he left that island, Dimitri only had one goal – get the palace and kill the Royals. That was when he had only heard one side of the story and to him, at the time, it was more than enough.
He then met Anya and even before he knew who she was, he started to feel different. He still at the time wanted to hurt them –a lot – but he had been told stories by Anya about how good the Prince was and how Princess Elena had the warmest soul in all of Daighte. He didn't want to believe it but he did.
Finally, he found out who Anya was and then killing them all was completely out of the question. Dimitri wanted to get rid of the King but he had enough faith in Anya and her father that he knew they would let out the humans and hopefully sorcerers (that were not guilty of anything) back into Daighte.
Anya said that it was Elena's soul that was the kindest but he disagreed. He believes that to be Anya. She did not judge him as soon as she saw him despite it being illegal and she also defended him against her friend – her best friend – and she treated him only with kind and love.
He was not going to kill her family – he was not going to hurt her like that. If she was like that with Darya dying, how would she cope if it was her mother? Father? Sister? He knew that she wouldn't and it would cripple her emotionally.
Killing the king however, that was a different story. She will be furious with him and she may fall out of love with him but at the same time, he also felt like it was an act that may be forgivable. Would he be sent to Anceps? Most definitely but his family would also hopefully be released. His father had no more magic and the rest of his family didn't. They would not be a threat.
That is why he must do it.
"Dimitri. I can see that your loyalties have changed." His father mused after the two men had sat in silence for ten minutes. "Of all of my children, the one I thought I could rely on the most has let me down. I am disappointed."
Dimitri gave his father a scathing look. "Do not even dare go there. Father." He added as more of an afterthought.
"And why not, son?"
"I was never a son to you." Dimitri snapped. "I was a soldier who was trained to save your family. I was never included in family matters, I was only there to protect you. I was nothing more than a bodyguard."
Nikolai looked hurt at his son's words. He never knew this was how he felt. He couldn't understand it, he always thought that when they were in Anceps, they had had a decent relationship. How could Dimitri feel so abandoned?
"I'm sorry-" Dimitri started after seeing his father's sudden, sullen eyes. He shouldn't have said that. He never felt as bad as he described – sure, sometimes he did but his father and certainly his mother had always loved him. He never doubted that.
"Don't be." Nikolai cut him off. "I never knew you felt that way. I should be the one to say sorry. I guess this is why you are disagreeing with me. You can obviously see that you are now more powerful than me and you could easily override me."
"No, that isn't-"
Again, he was interrupted. "You see, I always tried my best but I saw your mother and siblings and I just knew that if we didn't have all the strength we could get we would be all be dead. When you were born and I held you in my arms for the first time, I just knew that you would be more special than any of the others – and I was right Dimitri."
Dimitri felt a swelling of pride in his chest. His father and he had never had many one-to-ones. They just both had an understanding that they were there if and when needed.
"Father, I can't kill Anya's family. I have no qualms about the King but going after the rest would be cold blooded murder and I know that this isn't you."
"You don't understand love, son." Nikolai sighed. "I would do anything for any of my children and desperate times call for desperate measures."
"Don't you see?" Dimitri cried exasperated. "I do understand love. I am willing to go against my father just to save Anya and her family. You said you will do anything for me, please. Please, I am begging you, do not do this."
Nikolai stared off into the distance. He wanted to fulfil his son's wish but what about the rest of their family who are stuck on Anceps, would a revolution and abolishment of the whole monarchy not be the first step towards freedom?
Hi, I am sorry it is a little shorter but I want to get this story finished now and I felt like it came to its natural end.
I feel like there is going to be about five or six more chapters left.
What do you think Nikolai is going to do? Do you think Dimitri will save Anya? Hmmm...
