It was a big day for the students at St Heart's. It was finally science competition day. Exactly a week ago, Mr Flatly announced the competition and gave his students seven days to come up with their science inventions. A few people did group projects, while some went solo. Alex and Tom entered as a pair, and Dan participated as a solo entrant, along with Roly, Bryon, and a few other classmates. Melissa had entered as a group with her friends. The students were in a classroom waiting for Mr Flatly to review their science projects.
"You see Mr McNab? told you a science competition would inspire the pupils," Mr Flatly told Mr McNab as they entered the room where the students were waiting.
"Oh absolutely(!) Donaldson here is studying what crickets do in their spare time." Mr McNab said as he walked over to Roly's science experiment.
"Can't believe they'd rather eat leaves than watch telly."
"Whereas Ditchwater is studying the effect of music on plants," Mr McNab says as he walks over to Byron, who is singing to his plants.
#I loved your flowers, so bright and red#
#But now they're gone... #
"And you're all dead," Byron finished his song with a defeated sigh.
"Ah! Whereas Tupper here, now, his 'groundbreaking' project involves staring out the window and Cooper staring at a computer screen:" Upon hearing their names, they turned to face Mr Flatley and Mr McNab. Tom took off his glasses.
"They're germ-specs, sir. You can see every germ in the room, and the info gets put into the computer"
"May I?" Mr Flatley asked, wanting to try them. He took off his glasses as Tom passed over the Germ-specs.
"Absolutely."
"Oh, that's extraordinary! Ha-ha!" Mr. Flatley exclaims as he turns around to see the display of germs and their names around the room. Alex observes the information that is transferred to the computer. Mr Flatley smiles as he carefully hands the glasses back to Tom.
"But look at this!" Alex said as she turned the computer around to face the teachers. The screen showed the colours of a line graph marking the trend of germs disappearing at a concerning rate. "In the last week, germs have been disappearing like mad,"
"Really? How fascinating..." Mr Flatley began but was quickly distracted by Dan's project,
"Ooh, look, a volcano!"
"Oh, a volcano." Mr McNab said mocking Mr Flatly and following him to Dan's table. Tom sees Melissa and her two friends and walks over to them. Alex just watched Tom curious to see what he was doing.
"Listen, girls. If you need any help with your science project, I'm more than happy to help you with it." The girls exchanged glances before walking away in silence.
"So, I'll see you later then, yeah?"
Alex watched as the girls walked away, then looked back over at Tom, slightly frowning at him. Everyone's attention was brought to Dan as he started talking about his volcano.
"Isn't he amazing? I mean, the volcano - it's amazing," Melissa says, subtly trying to fix her mistake. The people who were closest to the volcano put on masks and watched as Dan activated the volcano. As the volcano finished its chemical reaction, the teen spies feel their pencils start to buzz in their blazers.
Alex swiftly shuts her laptop and tucks it under her arm without wasting a moment; she follows her friends out of the room. They rush down the corridor, arriving at the broom cupboard. Alex slid the light switch to the side and scanned her thumb. Dan opened the door, and the rest followed him inside. Tom, trailing behind, gave Alex a playful look.
