10.2. One Flew Over The Budgie's Cage

It took the team just over 30 minutes to get to the Institute where Frank was staying. Alex walked alongside Dan as they pushed the trolley that held a big box. Unknowingly to anyone (except the team) inside the box were Zoe and Aneisha.

Alex held the door open for Dan and followed him to the reception. Dan saw the receptionist and walked up to her.

"All right, love, delivery, where'd you want it?" Dan said with a big fake smile on his face. The dark-haired lady looked at Alex and Dan, her expression showed confusion, before she sat up straighter in her chair.

"Um, I don't remember ordering anything," The receptionist told the two 'delivery' people. Dan copied her look of confusion as he adjusted his cap. Standing from her chair, the receptionist turned her back to look at what Alex presumed was the records.

Dan quickly took out his communicator as Alex took a USB from her pocket and plugged it into the computer. Dan pushed three times on the rubber of his pencil to send a silent communication to Tom to confirm that the plan was a go.

The USB Alex had put into the computer connected it to the MI9 computers that were in their base. It allowed Tom access to the receptionist's computer, which meant that he could quickly create a fake delivery authorisation. This would allow the team to go into the building undetected.

Tom had only seconds to create the authorisation.

The dark-haired lady turned back to face Alex and Dan and clicked on a file on her computer. Dan looked at Alex slightly nervously in case Tom hadn't finished it on time, but Alex wasn't worried; this was basically child's play for Tom.

"Oh, here it is, um, just through here" The receptionist told them as she buzzed the door open for them.

Dan smirked, and Alex took it as a sign that he was impressed. Alex and Dan both pushed the trolley together as Dan whistled a random tune.

The receptionist led them to a storage room.

"Coner all right for you, love?" Dan asked as he pushed the box into the corner of the room.

"Lovely", Dan says, and he claps his hands together and picks at his teeth. As they were leaving, Alex reached into her pocket and gave Dan a gadget that would make the phone ring so Dan could get back inside.

Dan and the receptionist leave the room, and Alex starts to open the box to let the others out, but not before Zoe kicks the box open, making Alex jump back in shock.

"Damn it, Zoe, you could just let me open it!" Alex quietly shouted at Zoe while feeling her heart race in her chest. Zoe shrugs at her.

"Next time I'm the delivery guy", Aneisha complained as she stumbled her way out of the box. Alex winced slightly at the sound of Aneisha's bones crunching.

The trio's head all snap towards the door at the sound of it opening, but they all let out a sigh of relief when it's just Dan coming back to tell them the coast is clear for them to move. Alex said a quick goodbye to the girls before she and Dan tried to find the electrical room.

Apparently, neither of them had a good sense of direction, as they had ended up in the same corridor three times.

"This is getting ridiculous now" As Dan was about to reply, both their spy pods vibrated with a message from Tom.

'NUCLEAR LAUNCH ....... ... ... ........ AT 5 PM UNLESS .......'

"Well, that's not good", Alex spoke aloud to herself. Tom's voice then rang in Alex's ear.

"Aneisha, don't tell me Frank is in the happy chair"

"Yes.." Aneisha whispered so quietly, Alex almost missed it.

"I'm still trying to figure out what it does, but it can't be good. We need to get Frank out of there"

"No, don't blow your cover." Stella immediately rejected the idea. "We'll try to create a distraction. Dan, Alex, are you receiving me?"

Alex and Dan's eyes widened before Dan grabbed Alex and dragged her into another corridor.

"Yeah, yeah, we're nearly there", Dan quickly said to Stella. As Dan answered Stella, Alex gasped as she spotted a small lock box. Alex rushed over and used a small gadget she had on her to burn the lock box open.

Inside, there were keys. Alex looked for the electrical room keys and grabbed them once she found them. She held them up to show Dan.

They turned to run back up the corridor but were stopped as they very nearly ran directly into someone. They soon discovered that someone was Mr Flatly. They stood still in shock before running back again to make sure they weren't recognised.

"This way", Alex said to Dan when he ran the wrong way.

"Hurry up, guys", Aneisha's voice once again spoke in their ears just as they got to the electrical room.

They burst inside and quickly looked at all of the different labels on the electrical boxes.

"Alex, keys" Alex gave the keys to Dan, and he put them in the key hold to unlock one of the boxes and pulled the lever down, turning off the power for 'room X'. They both let out a sigh of relief and let themself breathe after all the adrenaline.

However, they couldn't even rest for 10 seconds before Tom spoke to them.

"Dr Retentive is on her way. Turn the power back on and skedaddle"

"Skedaddling now," Dan said as he turned the power back on and locked the box up securely. Just when Alex thought her part of the mission was over, Stella's voice entered her earpiece.

"Alex, I need you to quickly get down to the happy chair and help Aneisha with Frank"

"Eye eye Captain", Alex responded before taking one last deep breath of air before she had to rush down to the basement of the institute.

Alex managed to run down room X without running into any workers. As she got to the basement stairs, Stella's voice rang in her ears.

"Get the chair ready, we need a test subject" Alex walked at a fast pace until she appeared in front of the door of room X.

"Frank", Alex said in relief as she entered the room and stood next to Aneisha. Frank nodded at her in acknowledgement before putting in his earpiece.

"What's going on?" he asked.

"We need to put someone in the chair", Tom's voice spoke in the team's ears.

"Now?"

"You can't be serious?!"

"Tom's found a way of reversing the process; we need to give Bland's memories back by 5 o'clock, or millions of people could be killed." Stella paused for a brief second.

"There's a catch, the noro- you tell him", Stella sighed as she cut herself off.

"I've got enough bandwidth for one set of data. I can find out how to reverse the chair, but whoever is in it at the time will be wiped, all their secrets will be lost forever," Tom explains to the team.

"Forever?" Frank repeated.

"Why don't we zap the Dr, Will be doing her a favour, she'll forget her evil side and go back to healing people", Aneisha suggested her idea, only half joking.

"Now hold on, we can't blow our cover if KORPS thinks something is wrong; they'll launch their weapon now. We've seen them do it before Stella." Frank quickly addresses both Aneisha and Stella.

"We're running out of time. We need someone in that chair, or we could face a nuclear wipeout." Stella once again told the team to put the pressure on them.

Frank slowly turns away from Aneisha and Alex to look at the chair. He lets out a small sigh before telling his team.

"Then it has to be me"
