I was in the 5th grade, and Grace wasn't in my class anymore. We were still best friends, but we couldn't talk in class. I would talk to Alan, David, and Tracie all the time though. We would all get in trouble sometimes because we talked so much.
Grace had still kept my secret tightly to her chest; she hadn't told a soul. She and my parents were the only people who knew I was a wolf, not even Alan knew. I'm kind of glad that he doesn't know, I don't want him to think I'm crazy.
. . .
Alan and I were playing video games at his house with Grace watching us, bored of course. She wasn't much of a fan of video games. Sometimes I wondered what she did for fun since she doesn't ever play video games.
We were playing a game called Bug Heroes on Alan's Xbox. The goal of the game was that you had to be a bug and fight a bunch of bad bugs to protect your food stash. Sounds pretty stupid, but trust me, it was a fun game.
"Nooo! That king slug got me!" Alan wailed as he re spawned all the way back at our food stash. "I'm just gonna protect the stash from back here," he said, defeated. He played as Beetle, a huge beetle that had a huge stick to whack people with, and I played as Spider, an assassin spider with four sharp blades. She was the coolest and fastest out of all the bugs you could choose from.
I slashed the king slug that had previously killed Alan into two pieces, and bug guts went everywhere. I heard Grace behind us say "Eww so gross..." and I just laughed at her.
"Grace we have to get a game that you can play," I say while brutally killing an enemy warrior bug.
"No thanks! Video games are not for me," she said with a hint of disgust in her voice. I laughed again and continued slicing open slugs, and every time I did Grace would say "Ew."
I glance over at Alan for a second, and he looked as if he felt a little bad for Grace.
"Hey, uh, Calla, we should turn this off now, uh, I'm getting kinda bored," he said.
"You never get bored with video games, Alan," I say.
"Y-yeah well I'm kinda bored now," he said turning his Xbox off, and put his controller on top of his Xbox.
"Hey! You didn't even save the game!" I whined. Alan's face blushed a bit, and he turned to Grace. I still sat on the floor with the controller in my hands, my mouth dropped open a bit.
"W-what do you want to do Grace?" Alan asked shyly. I puffed my cheeks out; I do that whenever I'm angry.
"I dunno, lets go outside and look at your flowers!" she says. He hates looking at flowers!
"S-sure!" he said. What the heck!?
They start to walk out of Alan's bed room, leaving me behind. I frantically put my controller on top of the Xbox and scamper out of the door. What just happened..? I quietly growl as I follow behind Grace and Alan out of the back door.
Grace runs over to the large garden Alan's mom grew, and walks through it stepping on the stone pathway. Alan followed her not far behind. I watch as they both slowly disappear into the colorful flowers and I look down in disappointment.
I turn around and walk back inside to look for Alan's mom.
"Mrs. Reynalds?" I called. Alan's mom walked into the room I was in.
"Yes, dear?" she asked, kindly.
"C-could I call my mother? My stomach doesn't feel good," I lied.
"Of course, dear," she said, picking up the home phone from the counter and handed it to me.
"Thank you!" I say and dial Mother's number.
"Hello?" she answered.
"Mother? Um, can you pick me up from Alan's house, please?" I ask with a bit of a whiney tone.
"Sure sweetheart, I'm on my way. I love you."
"Thank you! I love you too!" I say and hang up, handing Alan's mom the phone back.
I patiently wait on the front porch for Mother. After what feels like forever but had actually been five minutes, she pulls her car up in front of the house. I run out to her black truck, open the door, and sit in the passenger seat.
"I left early," I stated as Mother started to drive off.
She chuckled and replied; "I know, why is that?"
"Alan and Grace were leaving me out of stuff," I said. She hummed in reply and continued driving.
. . .
After school the next day, I didn't talk to Grace much on the bus like I usually did.
"Calla? Are you okay?" she asked softly. I could barely hear her since the bus was so loud. I'm sure a human couldn't hear her, but she knew that I could hear.
"What?" I shouted, pretending not to hear. She gave me an 'I'm not stupid' look. I huffed.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I say and turn to face the window. I hear her sigh and she turns away. I turn to face her and apologize.
"I'm sorry, it's just... yesterday you and Alan sort of just went off and did your own thing... and I was just left there," I said quietly.
"It's okay, really, I should be sorry. I'm sorry that we went off without you. We should've waited for you to come along," she said and smiled.
"It's okay," I say and we hug each other. "Wanna hang out today?" I ask. Her eyes widen and she nervously rubs her arm.
"What?" I ask.
"I-I'm hanging out with Alan today..." she says quieter than before.
"Oh, okay," I say as the bus comes to my stop, and Grace moves out of the way so I can get out. I quickly get off the bus without saying another word.
