I look at my old friend's other form. He was a fox! I didn't know that there could be such a thing as supernaturals that could shift into foxes!

'You're a wolf..?!' he asked me, hopping over the stream.

'You're a fox?!' I ask him. 'How come you never told me?!'

'I didn't want you to think I was weird or something..!' he says.

'Same here!' I exclaim and trot around him, checking him out.

'Shift into a human so I can see what you look like!' he says, excitedly. He watched as I was moving around him.

'Uhh, I can't. I'm naked,' I say with a 'duh' tone.

'Your clothes don't stay on your human form when you shift?' he asks, puzzled.

'No, yours do?' I tilt my head to the side, questionably.

'Yeah, it's pretty cool,' he says, shrugging.

'Lets go back and get my clothes so we can talk in human form,' I say.

'Alright,' he says and follows me back through the forest, to the dead tree I usually put my clothes down at.

Once we get to the clearing where my tree is, I walk up to my pile of clothes. I tuck my ears down in embarrassment when I realize that I had put my panties on top of the pile. Hopefully he doesn't see my underwear...

'T-turn around,' I say to him quickly, and he does so.

I shift into a human, and quickly put my clothes back on. When I finish putting my clothes on, I glance at Alan's fox and turn to face the opposite direction as him.

"Okay, I'm turned around. When I say 'go,' then you shift, and we both turn around," I say to him. He couldn't answer me because he was a wolf and couldn't really speak, but I don't hesitate when I say; "Go!"

I excitedly turn around, and see what he looked like. Man, he was cuter than Vincent was! I notice his blond hair had grown a bit darker than it used to be, and it was long. He flipped his hair as we both check each other out.

He had skinny arms and legs, but not too skinny, and he was a bit taller than I was. He was wearing a black sweatshirt with baggy dark blue jeans that brought out his blond hair, and his metallic blue eyes.

"Your fox has the same eye color as your human," I say to him.

"Yeah, it's weird isn't it?" he says back. "I guess I should compliment you now," he says awkwardly.

"No, it's more like reunion time! We're supposed to talk to each other and get to know each other and stuff!" I say, excitedly. "Then compliments." I wink at him, and he rolls his eyes.

"How have you and Grace been? Did you two end up dating?" I ask him.

"Uhh... we did date for the first year and a half of middle school, then when second semester of seventh grade came around, she had to move out of state..." he said, sadly.

"Oh..." I say, looking down at the ground. "That really sucks."

"Yeah, it does," he says, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. He reaches behind him, and pulls up his hood.

"So... question time for you," he says and flips his hair. "How is being a wolf on you?" he asks.

"I love it! It is a lot of fun running around these woods," I say, looking around Alan and I.

"How come you never realized I was a fox? I always smelled something funny on you, I just didn't know what it was. I couldn't ever recognize it," he says, questionably.

"I couldn't smell fox on you. Your fox's scent was hidden when you were in human form. When you were a fox, I smelled some human on you, but your scent mostly smelled like a fox's," I answer.

"Hmm, interesting," he says. "So, awkward compliment time?" he asks.

"Sure, why not?" I ask rhetorically, and roll my eyes.

"Your wolf has amazing fur, and your human has beautiful hair and eyes," he says softly. He starts to walk closer to me, and he stops right in front of me. My heart beats hard and fast in my chest. There was a word that kept repeating itself in my mind; Mate, mate, mate, mate. I wondered why.

"Do you hear it too?" he asks, and begins to slowly repeat the word my mind has been repeating. "Mate, mate, mate... We're mates, Calla. We are meant to be partners for life. Your wolf and my fox didn't know this when we were young. They know now that we are meant for each other, and we're meant to stay together until death," he says. "My mom and dad both explained the whole 'mate' thing to me when I graduated elementary school," he explained.

I felt my face get hot. Mates? With Alan? The boy I beat up on my first day of Kindergarten? It couldn't be...

He stares directly into my eyes.

"Have you had your first kiss?" he asks. I shake my head.

"Neither have I," he smiles and gently places his hand on my cheek. He leans in, and closes his eyes as he kisses me. I begin to sweat on my palms, and I just awkwardly stand there, as Alan slowly kisses me.

He pulls back, and looks at me in the eye, smiling. "Cal, I'm glad to call you my mate," he says, softly and quietly.

I back up a few steps.

"I-I'm only in 8th grade, Alan. W-we can't be mates..." I say, quietly. He sighs and looks down at the ground.

"Hmm," he hums, thinking to himself. "Do you not want to be mates?" My heart beats faster. I do want to be mates with him, but I don't feel like I'm ready... How do I tell that to him?

"I, uhh... I do," I say, awkwardly. He smiles.

"Good," he says and pulls me in by the waist for a tight hug. I hug him back, tightly, giving him the best hug I could. "I am ready to spend the rest of my life with you, Calla White," he says into my hair.

I feel my cheeks blush and my heart speeds up, but I don't say anything in return. I don't know if I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with Alan. I don't even know if I should, but he's the only one I know that is close to my species. Maybe he can help me figure out more about myself.

When we break from the long hug, he puts his hand on my waist.

"A-are your parents foxes too?" I ask, trying to break the awkward silence.

"Yes," He answers. "What about your parents?"

"My parents are humans. They took me in when I was two, and raised me. I don't have any clue where my real parents are, they abandoned me when I was a newborn. I don't even remember what they looked like," I say.

"Oh, that's sad... I'm sorry," he says,

"Don't be sorry," I say cheerfully, and playfully punch his arm. We both laugh, and mess around with each other for a bit. I poke his face, pull at his sleeves, and he does the same back to me. We both laugh at our stupid play, and sit down on my tree seat.

"Do you want to come to my house and hang out?" he asks.

"Sure, how about tomorrow?" I respond.

"Oh yeah, it's like 9:30 at night." He slaps his palm to his forehead and laughs to himself. "Yes tomorrow. I'll come pick you up at your house. Same place you lived in when we were little, right?"

"Yep," I answer.

"Okay cool," he says and smiles. I check my phone for the time; 9:38. "Oh! could I get your phone number as well?" he asks me, pulling out his phone from his pocket.

"Sure," I say and take his phone after he opens a new contact. I put in my name and my phone number, and save it into his contacts.

"Thank you," he says.

"No problem. I should probably head back home now, I have to shower and stuff," I say to him.

"Alright, Wolfie, I'll see you tomorrow," he says and winks. I roll my eyes.

"Bye, Foxie," I say laughing at our stupid nicknames for each other, and I shift so I can quickly get back home.
