The Uninhibited Island; Class B's Base Camp
Thanks to Seong's directions that she gave us earlier, we arrived at Class B's location. Like Class C, they too made their base near the beach. It was a large, wide open area filled with sand and dirt on the ground. The air was cool and they had equipment set up and laid out for them to use. There was also a well, which I figured was where they collected their water from.
As Hasegawa was talking to a few of his classmates, he noticed us when we arrived and came rushing towards us. "Horikita-san, Furukawa-san, welcome. If you're here, I guess Ji-Young-san told you where we were?" I nodded.
"You and your class seem to be doing well. I'm impressed with what you did with your camp," I said as I looked around.
Class B was more organized and more cooperative with each other. There was a sense of unity between them and they were well disciplined. None of them showed any concern or voiced any problems, and they understood each other and their needs.
"It's all thanks to everyone's support," said Hasegawa. "Without them, we never would've been able to do all of this. It was all a team's effort."
"If I may ask, can you tell me how you managed to survive the first day? How many Points did you use? What's your plan going forward?"
"That's a lot of questions, Horikita-san. I don't think I'll be able to answer them all," he said.
"I apologize. I'm just curious as to how you were able to do all of this. I'm hoping I could find an idea or two from Class B."
"I see. If I'm going to answer your questions, I might as well give you two a tour of what we have." We nodded and followed behind Hasegawa as he led us around the camp. "As you know, the ocean has quite a lot of salt in it and there's a lot of risks when drinking it. So instead we used this well here."
Two female Class B students who were working near the well waved to greet us. We stopped next to them and looked down as the two pulled the rope to bring up the bucket filled with water.
"At first, we didn't know whether this was safe or not, so we tested it out. I drank it first and after waiting for a while, I didn't feel any symptoms. Once we learned that, we decided that we could use this as our water source."
Hasegawa grabs the bucket and hands it to the two girls, then we walk off to the next stop, which were their tents. They were set up far from the shore and near the woods where there was shade. Off to the side, they had hammocks hung up and temporary toilets placed down.
"The heat was a problem for all of us, so we did our best to make sure we stayed away from it. The hammocks were also quite helpful when we needed rest from staying too long in the sun." The three of us stopped and our tour with Class B ended. "For all of this...I'd say we used around 70 Points. We still have more Points left over, so we're not that worried. I'm planning to save those Points until we absolutely need to use them."
Hasegawa already had a plan in mind and thanks to his classmates, he was able to pull it off. They managed to use their Points wisely and saved many more Points for later use. After viewing everything, I can say that Class D was not as close as Class B.
"Well, I told you everything that I could. As for the reason why you're here, I assume you want to form a cooperative relationship during this exam?"
I nodded. "I understand that our classes are against each other in this uninhabited island exam, but I see it wouldn't do any harm if we work together to survive. If that's alright with you."
"That's fine, but what are you offering us?"
I placed my hand to my chin and thought about it for a moment. "How about a trade? Our class has quite a lot of vegetables and fruits, such as corn and bananas. We can give them to you in exchange for the fish you catch from the sea."
"Hmm...that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Alright then, I look forward to working with you here on the island, Horikita-san."
He reached his hand out, offering me a handshake. "Thank you," I said, shaking his hand.
From the woods, we heard footsteps and we turned to see Seong and her group returning from their scout. Behind them, there were other groups of Class B students who were sent out on their own scouts.
"Oh, Horikita-san, Furukawa-kun, you came."
"You're back, Ji-Young-san, everyone. How was the search?"
Hasegawa and the returning classmates walked far off to the side and they started telling him everything they found as they roamed the island. As we stood by and waited, I happened to notice Furukawa staring right, off into the distance where the woods went deeper.
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's probably nothing, but I thought I had noticed someone watching us while we talked."
A spy? I thought to myself. I remembered Furukawa telling me how there was someone who was watching our class as well. If he saw a spy here watching Class B, it likely means there are spies all over the island, monitoring all our classes. I might have to think of something to take care of our little problem.
After saying goodbye to Hasegawa and Seong, we left and using the coordinates on our GPS on our wristwatches, we came back to our base camp. However, the moment we arrived, we noticed something was wrong. There was a sense of gloom and looks of frustration on our classmates' faces.
The Uninhabited Island; Class D's Base Camp
"We're back. Did something happen while we were gone?" I asked.
Kasai and Kurino, who were frowning, both nodded and came to us. "After you two left, we went to work together to gather resources for the night and look for any food we could find. When we came back, I decided to check with our class and see if everyone was here."
"One person was missing," said Kurino. "Shirogawa-kun."
"Shirogawa-kun?" He was often invisible to all of us, so sometimes we would miss him when we looked around. However, looking at their faces, I assume that wasn't the case.
"We checked with Matsubara-sensei about it. She told us that he retired and returned to the ship."
Due to the retirement of Shirogawa Akihito, Class D is deducted 30 Points for this exam.
