Furukawa
The Uninhabited Island; Class D's Base Camp
It was now the fifth day of the exam. Like always, our class started our mornings with our usual preparations. The boys and girls came together to prepare breakfast, cutting some of the produce and fish. While they were doing that, I went over to one of the girl's tents where Horikita was sleeping.
"Horikita," I called her name at the entrance, only for there to be no answer. "Horikita?"
"Ugh..." It was faint, but I could hear her groaning inside the tent due to her condition. At least she was still alive.
From what I knew, yew shrub berries were quite dangerous due to the toxins they had. Eating them causes many symptoms to the person, and if a large dose was taken, it may even lead to death. Horikita knew the dangers of eating these berries, yet she wanted me to give it to her in order to start her plan. Perhaps that's why she only took one or two, just enough to make her sick. After she ate them, she waited patiently until she was ill. Now, here we are.
"Do you need help?" I asked.
"No...I'm fine. Just...give me a minute..."
I stood outside far from the tent and waited as she told me to. After a minute or two, I heard the sound of the tent door opening and looked to see Horikita coming out. She was pale and she seemed extremely tired from the dark circles on her face. Her condition may be worsening.
"Can you walk?" She takes a few steps, only to stumble forward.
"Don't look at me like that," she said. "I'll be fine..."
"...If you say so." Horikita covered her mouth, coughing to the side.
"So? How's the class?"
"Normal. We're preparing breakfast right now, and once we're done eating, it'll be time for morning roll call. If you plan to be there, you should get something to eat first. It'll give you enough strength to stand up at least."
"I see. Thank you for the advice..." Horikita coughed again.
"There's something you should know," I said. "Someone has been using our Points. More than usual."
"What do you mean...?"
"The last time we used our Points, we bought matches, a survival knife, some fishing line, and a meal set. With all of those added up, it would only have been a small amount of Points. However, when I checked our Point balance, I found out we lost more than that."
"And that's because someone used our Points to buy more items..." I nodded and she sighed. "How much?"
"Around 80 Points."
"...I'll go ahead and talk to everyone about it..."
"No. You're in no condition to do that. Stay here and rest in your tent for now."
Horikita stared at me for a moment, then nodded. "Alright..." She placed her hand over her forehead, checking her temperature.
"Have you been sick before?" I asked.
She shook her head. "This is my first time. Getting sick was a part of my plan, but...I never expected to be this sick..." I walked over to her and placed my hand over her forehead. It was warm and it seemed to be getting hotter. "What are you doing?"
"Checking on you myself," I replied. "Like I said, you should rest for now. If you need any food or water or anything else, I'll come and give it to you. No, actually, I think it's better for someone like Karuizawa to help you. I'll ask her to come and check on you every now and then."
"Thank you, Furukawa-kun. Tell me when it's time for roll call." I nodded, then Horikita went back in her tent, closing the door behind her.
"Furukawa-san." I turned and looked to see Kasai standing behind me.
"Kasai," I greeted him.
He looked at the tent where Horikita went inside and he frowned. "Is she not coming out today?" I shook my head and he stared at me for a moment before letting out a sigh. "I see. If you don't mind, can I talk to you for a moment?"
"Sure."
The two of us walked off to the side away from the others. Once Kasai made sure we were alone and no one was around to hear us, he bowed down in front of me.
"I apologize, Furukawa-san."
Confused, I tilted my head. "Apologize?"
"It was me who did it. The one who used our Points," he admitted. "The girls were begging me to use our Points to buy a few things for them. They wanted more items to make them more comfortable. I refused, but they asked again and again. Knowing they would continue to beg, I eventually gave up and did as they said, and we ended up using a lot of Points. I'm sorry."
"It's fine. Don't worry about it," I said. "I was about to ask everyone and find out who it was, but you made it easier by telling me. For that, thank you. I'll tell Horikita about it later."
"Thank you for understanding, Furukawa-san." Kasai stared back at the class. "I suppose we should go help them, right?"
"Right."
