Misaki

The Uninhabited Island; Class D's Base Camp

Today was the fourth day of the exam. I woke up and left the tent to start the new day. Outside, I saw Kasai and Kurino along with a few boys and girls making some breakfast for our class. The other day, Kasai and everyone else came back with more food. They found more corn and bananas, along with some mangoes and pears. With the agreement with Class B, we traded some of our food to get some fish and coconuts in exchange. Our current supply of food was more than enough for the rest of the week.

"Horikita." I turned and saw Furukawa.

"Furukawa-kun," I greeted him.

"I originally thought that it would take longer for them to recover from Shirogawa's retirement, but it seems their wounds heal fast."

"Yes, it seems so."

The retirement of our classmate dealt a major blow to our class and our Points. It broke many of our spirits. Luckily however, they managed to bring themselves back to their senses and reorganize themselves. It was only a day and I'm glad to see everyone come back together. It proved that each of them were growing.

"By the way," I said, "you mentioned to me yesterday that you were going to set up a trap. Did it work?"

"It did."

My face lit up, surprised. "Really? Who was it?"

"Her name was Tabiuchi Hana. She was from Class C like we originally suspected."

"Tabiuchi Hana...I think I remember seeing her when we were at their base camp. She's the girl with blonde hair, right? Where is she now?"

"I let her go."

"You let her go?" I repeated. "Why?"

"There was no point to it. Even if we wanted to, we couldn't keep her here without her consent. She also has many opportunities to escape from us, such as during roll call or when we aren't looking. And she was a spy. Had we kept her here, she would more than likely have found out who our leader was."

Taking his reasons into thought, I better understood why he chose to let her go. "...I suppose you're right. You made the right decision," I said. "Do you mind telling me everything that happened between the two of you before she left?"

Furukawa explained to me how she found her tied up due to the trap he laid out. Seeing she was in a helpless position, he used this opportunity to interrogate her. Like we suspected, she was a spy sent to gather information about us, specifically the identity of our leader. She was to report back and return to the camp to gather more. On herself, she had a digital camera, hand-held radio, and a flashlight. Once deleting the photos on the camera, that's when he let her go.

"I see. Speaking of Class C, when we visited them, they had used up all of their Points to have fun on the island. I wonder if they're doing well right now."

"Are you going to check?" I nodded. "I see. Good luck then." He turned around to leave, but I grabbed him by the arm, stopping him.

"Can I ask you to come with me?"

"Can't you ask someone else different this time? Like Kasai or Tsukamoto?" he said in a tired voice.

"You know I don't know them well, and out of the three of you, you're the better option I have." Kasai was too kind and too caring, and Tsukamoto would be a problem if his anger rose. Furukawa on the other hand was smart and compliant, and he looked threatening. That was a major factor.

He sighed. "Alright..."

After eating breakfast and taking morning roll call, the two of us walked away to head to Class C's base camp. Just then, we heard running footsteps from behind us.
