Misaki

The Cruise Ship; Central Park

Moving down a few levels, I arrived in the middle of the ship where they had an outdoor park. Here, it was quiet and serene-beautiful and peaceful. There were stone pathways with flowers and there were vineyards along with small trees. To the side, there were cafes with outdoor tables and chairs. In the center, there was a fountain and a spot where musicians would come to play. Normally, many people would be at this level, but at the moment, there was only me and Matsubara-sensei.

"You've finally arrived, Horikita Misaki."

Matsubara-sensei was sitting down near one of the tables near the cafe, taking a sip of coffee and having that usual smug look on her face. She gestured to me to take a seat and I did so.

"Congratulations on your special exam. Your class actually managed to get first place. I'm impressed."

Behind those words of praise, I had a feeling she was directing it to me alone. I suppose as a teacher monitoring the students on the island, she knew that it was me who was working behind the scenes, pulling the strings to get that outcome.

"I appreciate you saying that, Matsubara-sensei, but I assume this isn't the reason why I'm here, is it?"

Matsubara-sensei grinned. "No. I called you here so I could talk to you."

"Talk to me?" I repeated. "What for?"

Matsubara-sensei placed her mug down and she looked me in the eyes. "I know why you're here at this school." Confused, I tilted my head. "You didn't come here for a higher education, nor did you come here so you could get a ticket to a university or the job of your dreams. You came here because of something important to you."

"..."

"As you know, being a teacher, I know a lot about my own students by looking through their files. For you, I knew how your Okaa-san was single and how you were raised without an Otou-san in your life. I also knew about your Okaa-san being a former student at this school."

At the beginning of the school year, when Furukawa and I met her in her office, she talked to me about how she knew all about my family. She knew my mother was Horikita Suzune and about her connection to this school.

"When we had that meeting, do you remember how you acted towards the end?"

"..."

"When I told you how I knew everything about your Okaa-san's class, you jumped out of your seat. And the look on your face when I saw it...it's the look you have when you're close to reaching something."

"..."

"You're interested in your Okaa-san's class. No, you're interested in her classmates. One of them who you believe is your Otou-san. Am I wrong?"

"...And if I was?" I asked, hesitantly.

"Hm. Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything. All I'm going to do is offer you something that you've been wanting."

"An offer?" I repeated.

"Class D, Horikita Suzune's class from 16 years ago. If you'd like, I can give you information about it."

Upon hearing that, my face lit up. "...Can you really give that to me?" Matsubara-sensei gave me an assuring nod and I thought about it for a moment. "Just what are you trying to get out of this?"

"What I've always wanted from the beginning. You and the class to get to Class A. That's all."

"Even with my skills, I can't get our class to Class A so easily."

"That's fine. Whether it be a day or even all of your three years here, as long as you're Class A in the end." Matsubara-sensei picked up her mug and took a sip. "So? Do we have a deal?"

I stared at her and thought about her offer. I've been looking for clues from people who possibly once knew him to his achievements to grades to anything. Now, she's here to give it to me. Being a teacher, what she was saying couldn't exactly be impossible or a lie. If there was anyone here who could tell me anything about my mother's past or my father's identity, it would be her.

"...Alright. I accept your offer."
