The Uninhabited Island; the Beach

The seventh day, August 12th, the final day of the exam. Our class came together with the other three classes alongside our respective homeroom teachers at the beach. Here, we would hear about the results of our efforts.

Many of us were shaking, nervous to find out our scores. Unlike them however, there were those who were more calm and composed than they were, many of them being from Class A and Class B. Perhaps they were confident they were going to do well. As for Class C, we didn't see anyone. Anyone except Bushida, who was a mess with dirt and mud all over him.

"Yo, Class D," Bushida waved, greeting us with a grin on his face.

"Bushida...!"

"Seems like Horikita is not here. What, did she chicken out and leave because she was going to lose?"

"You...!" Tsukamoto clenched his fists, ready to punch him. Before Tsukamoto could lunge at him however, I grabbed him by the shoulder and stopped him.

"Enough, Tsukamoto."

"Tch..."

"Good dog." Bushida and Tsukamoto glared at each other, giving off such an intense aura.

"What are you doing, Bushida-san?" Thankfully, Kasai arrived at the right time before anything could escalate any further.

"Nothing," he replied. "I was just asking where Horikita went, that's all. But your friend here just couldn't handle such a simple question."

Tsukamoto grits his teeth and Kasai stood in between them. "I sincerely apologize, but I believe it's your wording that's making Tsukamoto-san mad like this. I recommend you not to say such things like this. As for your question, Horikita was sick and retired."

"I see. Thanks for the advice." Although Bushida thanked Kasai, he showed no sign of actually accepting it.

"The teachers are going to announce it soon. Why the hell are you so confident?" Tsukamoto asked abruptly. "You have 0 Points and you're not worried about a damn thing about it. You're going to lose, you know that?"

"You're right. My class and I have 0 Points, but..." Bushida turned around with his back facing towards us. "There's more than one way to gain Points."

With those last words, Bushida walked away to his spot and left Kasai and Tsukamoto with nervous looks on their faces. I stared at him for a moment before turning my attention towards the teachers up front, who were ready to give their speech. Murata-sensei took a step forward and raised a megaphone to his face.

"As your teachers, we have been watching you all closely for the past week. You have struggled and faced many challenges in this special exam, but many of you managed to push forward together. Through those tough times, you worked as a class. Be proud of that."

The students around us relaxed and were happy from Murata-sensei's words. Hearing praise from the teachers and no sudden announcement of another test gave them relief.

"Now then, I shall announce the results of your exam." Kasai and Tsukamoto turned to look at Bushida, who was calm and grinning, waiting patiently as if he knew what would happen.

From what I remember, I believed we had around 123 Points the last time we checked it. That's from all the items and equipment we bought, the meal sets, Shirogawa and Horikita's retirement, and my tardiness to morning roll call. As for the other classes, I would have to hear it from the teachers.

"Starting with last place: Class C, 0 Points!"

"What...?" Bushida muttered to himself.

"Hah! Eat it!" Tsukamoto mocked him, laughing at the same time.

"In third place, Class B with 120 Points. In second place, Class A with 221 Points. And in first place..." There was a brief pause and a moment of silence as we waited for Murata-sensei's answer. "...Class D with 244 Points!"

A commotion broke between the four classes. They were all shocked, confused by the scores of their respective classes. Out of all of them, Class D was the most confused. They never expected to gain this many Points.

"How did Class D gain this many Points...?" muttered a student from Class A, which seemed to be Ozawa Kazuo.

"We did it!"

The girls and boys in our class erupted into cheers, celebrating our victory. I looked at all of them, doing nothing but stare at them in silence. Horikita's plan succeeded. My work was done.
