Bienvenida a Mexico

The sign greets me as soon as I exit the airport. My city welcomes me with its mild temperature and vibrant vibes.

Home.

After spending more than half of year away from here, I'm finally back. I'm home. The happiness of return is shadowed by the pain of what I left behind. The person I gave my heart.

No bad thoughts, Emory!

I scold myself internally. Before my mind takes back drive, I quickly hail a cab and go on my way. I'm so excited to see my parent's reaction. I didn't tell them I was arriving today. Truth is, I didn't think about it while I was weeping my heart out in plane. But whatever. It is what it is.

Twenty minutes later, I'm standing in front of my house. The familiar look of beach facing house makes my heart smile with joy. I step inside the porch and just in time Bruno, my pet dog, jumps into me, licking my face.

"Bruno! I miss you so much" I giggle hugging his fluffy body. He woofs, jiggling his tail in response.

"Now keep quiet. I'm going to surprise Papi" I command and he stops barking.

I quietly step inside the house and the cozy smell of mom's scented candles greets me. I make my way to the living room and as expected dad was sitting in front of TV, cheering for his favourite football game.

I silently stand behind his sofa and cover his eyes with my hand.

"Guess who" I giggle as my father jumps up and pick me up in a bear hug.

"She is back. Sherry, come here. SHE IS BACK" dad screams while twirling me in the whole room. I'm laughing so hard that my stomach is hurting.

"Why are you shouting Joshua?" mom grumbles coming in the room but stop midsentence as she sees me.

"Hey Mami!" I smile under dad's arms. Mom runs in our direction and tackles me into a hug. Yeah, my family is big into hugs.

"Oh Jesus! You are finally back. Why didn't you tell me" Mom questions once she is done with kissing my cheeks.

"Surprise." I grin

"It's the best surprise. Now I'm never letting you go." Dad grumbles pulling me into another hug.

"Okay. Enough for now. Let her take a breath Joshua" mom chides dad.

I take my favourite spot on the couch and Bruno jumps in my lap, rubbing his nose on my face. I gently pet his head.

I soak in the comfort of my home, remembering all the memories I made here. The time when dad taught me how to ride a bike or when mom let me do yoga with her. I recall the nights I spent with dad in the garage working on engines and when mom yells at both of us for staying too late.
