~Qibli~
"Seriously?" Swordtail asked the moment Moon had left hearing range. I sighed, looking down at the gift bag. "15 years of marriage and you still forgot your anniversary?" He cocked a brow.
"I just..." I really had no valid excuse. Sure, I was busy and I was eager to finally find a good lead on something that's had us stumped for a month now, but Moon was my wife—she should have been my priority. Besides, it's not like I was getting anywhere staring at a bunch of files. I could easily pass the case onto someone else, but...
I felt like I had a weird connection to those men. But it was only a hunch that wasn't worth the life of those women, so if I had to pass the case, I would.
If it, like, came down to it.
Like, really came down to it.
"Happy wife, happy life," Swordtail pointed out. "And currently, your wife isn't happy, so I'm willing to bet you're sleeping on the couch tonight."
I sighed again, slumping down into the chair. "Yeah, probably."
"Speaking of your wife," Swordtail continued hesitantly. "Did she... tell you?"
I frowned, turning to look at him curiously. "Tell me? What?"
He furrowed his brows. "Ah. Never mind, then." He turned to the files and continued looking through them. I didn't say anything, but my glare stayed firm and burned a hole through the back of his head.
"Either you speak up now or you get in a hands-on combat with me," I offered, but I was completely serious.
Swordtail set the files down, but he didn't look up. "It isn't my place to tell."
"If it's about the pregnancy, then it's old news," I calmly said, wondering if that was what he was talking about. Swordtail lifted his gaze.
"So you do know. Okay, good."
I slowly leaned back in my chair, and we both exchanged suspicious looks. "Does that mean... you know?" I asked.
"If it's about Luna, then yes," Swordtail said.
"Okay then."
"...Okay then."
I sighed, leaning back into my chair as I stared at those damned files again, and then I looked down into the gift bag, but I didn't remove the tissued paper. Not yet, anyway. I didn't feel I deserved to until I made it up to Moon, which would take quite a bit.
Suddenly, the door that led to the basement swung open abruptly, startling both Swordtail and me into sitting up straighter. Just as quickly, four feet thudded down the stairs in a hurried manner that really only served to scare us both.
"Qibli!" Moon's voice cried as she ran over to the table we were at. She slapped down a piece of paper right at the center as Luna stopped beside her. "Look what just showed up in the mail."
Swordtail and I both leaned forward, squinting at the tiny sheet of paper. In it wrote:
I'm coming for you, Moon. I promise you.
There was no signature, no initials, nothing. Just an eerie letter with no actual chance of leading us to something.
"What the hell?" Swordtail asked, frowning at the letter. "Who left it?"
"We don't know," Luna breathed. "We just now got a knock from the front door and then we saw this. That's it." She shifted. "Maybe the person is still out there. Either way, chasing after them would be pointless because... well, it wasn't an actual threat."
