Rose's POV
They say there's nothing like winning your nineteenth case. Some kind of lucky number. Well... maybe for the client.
To be honest, I'd already drowned the victory in champagne.
My colleagues at the courthouse had all pitched in to get us a table at the best restaurant in town. Even Park Sunghoon had joined in. It proved there was still a heart beating behind his cold, arrogant facade.
Only my husband was missing.
I would've worried if Jongseong, his best friend, hadn't mentioned the check Jaeyun had written for tonight. Something more important must've come up.
What was more important than me?
After the party, I came home tipsy, tossed my fur coat, birkin bag, and heels in the entryway. He should've been there. He wasn't.
I'd already pictured him waiting for me shirtless, flowers in hand, an outrageously expensive gift somewhere nearby, and me ignoring the whole display just to hug him and hear him whisper that I was the best and that he loved me.
I could dream on.
I melted under a hot shower, until the soft purr of his car pulled up to the curb at 11:47 pm. I went downstairs in my prettiest red nightie to kiss him goodnight.
"Where were you?"
I found him in the kitchen, a double whiskey at his lips. It meant at least two things had pissed him off today.
"I missed you."
He bit his lip, his gaze softening into that puppy-like look. He set his drink aside and pulled me in, his arm resting at the small of my back.
I wrapped mine around his neck, my damp hair sticking to his shirt. Our lips brushed. His scent clung to me before I even noticed.
"So—"
He didn't get to finish. I shoved him back into the kitchen island, a sharp groan breaking out of him.
"What's your goddamn problem?" he hissed.
"Oh, I don't know." I emptied his half-finished drink into the sink and crossed my arms, watching him. "Maybe it's the woman's perfume on your collar."
Something cherry, black rose, and amber.
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat as he tried to come up with a defense. A short, breathy laugh slipped past his lips. "C'est rien."
Nothing, apparently.
He took both my hands in his, his thumbs brushing lightly over my fingers. I glanced down at our hands, then back at him.
