Rose's POV

I spent the first hour going through the case file Jungkook had forgotten to hand me in the first place.

I skimmed the neighbors' testimonies, the arrest details... Most of them reeked of paid lies. How had the cops not noticed? Even a child could tell the truth from the lies.

The only evidence that didn't look tampered with were the crime scene photos. I kept going back to them, like they might tell a different story.

Everything looked disturbingly real: the knife in the sheets, the blood on the fur rug, even the neat lines of coke drawn with a credit card on the nightstand.

She arrived at the hospital late that night, alone, injured, covered in blood. Not long after, she accused her boyfriend of attempted murder.

Two stab wounds to the left side, one to the right leg, bruises and swelling, two broken ribs, scratches across her face, internal bleeding.

The doctors said Yuna died around midnight. Then she somehow came back from the dead. No explanation.

It wasn't her time to die.

I needed a break from this web of lies. "Mr. Lee?" I called, lifting my eyes from the reports and rubbing the back of my neck.

He was half-asleep when my voice startled him. I couldn't help the small smile as he blinked awake, trying to place where he was.

"Call me Evan, please." His voice came out hoarse, at odds with his doe eyes, and it made refusal feel suddenly impossible.

I took a deep breath. "Alright, Evan."

I picked up the file, shoved the photos back inside, and tossed it onto the edge of the table. His eyes tracked every move.

"This thing is absolute bullshit," I muttered, opening my laptop. "The testimonies were probably bought. It's all garbage."

"You bet. Daddy-in-law wants me to get the death penalty." He laughed like he wasn't talking about his own life.

Some problems really did sound ridiculously insane. And I complained about my in-laws, when Evan had it worse. His father-in-law was literally a fucking governor.

Come to think of it... I hated Jaeyun's parents.

"We're in New York, you won't get the death penalty," I replied, trying to reassure him. At least he wasn't in denial. He knew what he was facing.

He kept laughing, leaning closer before whispering, "Rose... I didn't mean legal execution." The sound of my name on his lips sent a shiver down my spine.

Of course he didn't. That idiot nearly put the governor's daughter six feet under. The least that could happen to him was getting killed by a hitman. I didn't even want to picture the worst.
