Yunho:
"Hyung, how you met with Mingi hyung?" Jongho asked me during dinner.
"That's a long story," I responded.
"Come on, honey, tell our story," Mingi said.
Yunho's memories:
I was recently assigned to lead children to the other side. It was only my second task after my promotion. I waited near a children's park. My mission was to lead a little girl, supposed to die in a car accident. I stood by the road, watching her chase her ball on the street. As she ran on the road, I prepared to collect her soul, and then someone ran to her and pulled her away. It made me frustrated. She was supposed to die then and there after getting hit by a car. Yet, she got rescued by a high schooler. It wasn't my first time getting interrupted during my work. I could follow her on her way home and take her soul. I followed the girl on her way. But she was walking with that student. He sent her home safely. I tried to follow her inside, but as I passed by that student, he grabbed my arm. I looked him up and down. That boy was scared of me, yet he stopped me.
"Who are you? Why are you following her?" the boy asked me. I was a little shocked. It was unusual for a mortal to see me.
"Let go of me. Her time has come. I need to take her," I told him, but he wasn't letting go.
"No, she's too young."
That guy was serious. It irritated me but also made me chuckle. I pulled my arm from him and followed her inside, passing through the walls. I had to do my job. And no student would stop me.
On the next day, I had some work in the same area. It was close to a high school. There was some time before my task, so I went to look for that boy. Students from that school wore the same uniform as him. I walked inside the school, looking around for him. He wasn't in the classrooms, so I went to the cafeteria. There, I spotted him. He was eating lunch with his classmates, but they were leaving. The boy tried to hide his sadness. It made me feel uncomfortable in a way. For some reason, I decided to sit with him.
As I sat down, the boy looked up at me. He had confusion on his face. Then I saw his anxiety. But I just took a slice of orange from his plate and smiled.
"What are you doing here?" he asked me.
"I came to see you, little hero," I responded. "Why did your friends leave you?"
"They always do. It's because I eat slowly," the boy responded.
His answer was upsetting. What kind of friends would leave their buddy only because he eats slower than them? I felt a little angry with them. The boy in front of me didn't look too bad. He seemed like a good kid. Maybe I could keep him company for today. I had at least an hour before my job.
"What is your name?" I asked the boy.
"Song Mingi. What about you?"
"Jung Yunho," I answered.
From that point on, we chatted while he was eating slowly. Mingi was surprisingly soft and innocent. I enjoyed our conversation and told myself to visit again. After Mingi finished, I sent him to his classroom and proceeded with my day. I felt better after spending some time with Mingi.
Afterwards, I started visiting more often. Spending time with Mingi was the best part of my day. We talked about a lot of things. Mingi shared with me his hopes and dreams for the future. He made me forget I was a reaper. Being with him made me feel like an ordinary human. Mingi understood my job, but he didn't judge me for it. I started to spend more time with Minmi, not only during his lunch breaks. I even attended his graduation.
On his graduation day, I waited for him outside the school. I even brought him a bouquet to celebrate his graduation. I waited and waited, but Mingi wasn't coming. I felt a little anxious. After all, I prepared so much for that day. I asked Hongjoong to pick up my outfit, Woo chose the bouquet, and I showed up on time. But my friends weren't coming. I decided to search for him. I walked around the school, but he was nowhere to be seen. The only place I hadn't checked was behind the school. And there he was. Mingi stood there with a girl. She confessed her feelings for him, and he said nothing at first. Then I heard him speak.
"I'm sorry, but I already have someone in my heart. That person is someone, who understands me and spends his free time with me, even when he's tired. I can't accept your confession. Sorry," Mingi said, making the girl cry and run away.
I stood there speechless. Who was that person? Mingi had told me nothing about having a crush on anyone. I felt hurt, my chest was tight. Not a single word could escape my lips. Before I could shake myself from that nasty feeling, Mingi turned my way. The moment he saw me, his face turned red. Mingi came to me, and I couldn't even say a single word. Instead, I gave him the flowers. He took them and blushed even more.
"How much did you hear?" Mingi asked me.
"I heard enough," I responded.
"Then you know how I feel about you," Mingi said shyly. "Jung Yunho, I know we are different, you are a grim reaper, and I'm just a boy. But I am in love with you!"
Mingi almost screamed the last part. I was the person he loved? Hearing all of that made me shed tears. I had no idea why, but I felt so happy. I hugged my friend, soon to be my lover. Mingi hugged me back, before kissing my cheek. He was so sweet and innocent. I couldn't handle it all.
...
"After his confession, we started dating. At some point, I gave up my immortality. I wanted to spend my days with Mingi as a human," I finished.
Jongho looked at us with a smile. He had the same expression as someone who just watched a romantic movie. Well, our story was like one. I couldn't deny it. I tried to look at my love, he was ready to cry. Ah, my hubby was as emotional as always. Just as I loved him.
