Dinner
SOWON SAT BETWEEN HER PARENTS.
Sowon wore a matching dress similar to her mother's floral top, a chunky white headband and ruffled socks with black flats. Her father was in a simple white polo that had a few buttons in the front. He wore black slacks and basic white shoes.
Her mother, nearly over dressed as always wore a floral top, a long white skirt, white heels, and a white headband in her long freshly curled hair.
Compared to simple attire the rest of the family wore you'd think they were gonna take family photos afterwards.
"Where is hae-in?" grandfather asked. "She's still asleep." Mother piped up. "I see, she must be still in shock" grandfather said.
"I examined the area of the course, the wires had been cut. The boar was already shot and had got through there" Hyun-woo said. Hae-Min's eyes eyes widened "Someone tried to hurt my sister?". "That trail was meant for Chairman hong" Suel-hee piped up.
"So what are you trying to say? that someone is after father and someone put a shot boar there on purpose?" Beom-ja spoke up. "I'm just saying no one here knows who could have done that" Suel-hee replied.
Sowon looked over at her mother's confused face. Sowon placed a small hand into her mother's, gaining her attention. "It's okay momma" she said. Suno looked and Eun-sung from across the table.
His knuckles turning white from his grip. "Try the soup Mr.Yoon, i caught these pheasants myself". "Oh please father tell the truth these are all bought from a farm nearby" Beom-ja said making Hae-min and Grandfather laugh.
"Congratulations Kiddo, you beat everyone" Beom-ja stroked the back on Hae-min's hair. "Thank you auntie" Hae-min smiled. "Yes, How did you learn how to shoot so well Hae-min?" Eun-sung asked.
"Well I wanted to be in the army when i was younger so aunt beom-ja had one of her husbands teach me. I did a few trainings here and there" she shrugged it off.
"A few? Hae-min did all the courses over the summer and even attended a few boot camps." Grandfather bragged. "That's interesting. I never pictured you'd be so good with a weapon".
"That's not all she's good at, she did a lot of sports and things like that over the years" Her aunt continued to flex her as she sat blushing.
"I liked to be active. Please no need to boast about it. Oppa did very similar things" She looked at Hyun-woo who bashfully nodded. "Shall we eat?" Hae-min asked.
Beom-Ju placed a large piece of the Peasant leg onto Hyun-woo's back. Hae-min blew on the food before feeding her daughter. "Mmm! it's so good" Sowon exclaimed.
Hae-min looked at her husband when her father loudly scolded the staff. "Baek likes it charcoal-grilled!". "Really i'm fine i like it this way" Hyun-woo said. "Are you sure?" Beom-ju asked.
Hyun-woo nodded and his father in law let go of his arm. "Are you eating enough son? Eat more!" He said to Suno.
"Weren't you born and raised in the states?" Seon-hwa asked Eun-sung. Suno looked up quickly hearing those words. "I was about 13 years old when i went to the states. i lived in korea before that" He admitted.
"That's really interesting, I first met suno when we were 12 and 13. I wonder if we all ran into each other before" Hae-min added. "Did your entire family immigrate or were you sent to study?".
"I was adopted. By the time i finished college my adopted parents passed away. Now i don't have anyone in the states or korea". "Nonsense. You have me and Suno, you mentioned you two were friends" Hae-min gave a smile.
"I lost my family too. When i was 15, i came here all on my own" Grandfather started. "I'm starting to see you in a different light now. you aren't like the generation today. Neither are you Suno".
"Thank you" the two men said in sync. "He's right. I'm proud of you, from now on you can think of us as your family in korea" Seon-Hwa said.
Hae-min shot her husband a questioning look. The exact same speech they gave suno when they found out he was on a scholarship and living in a tiny one bedroom apartment half way across town.
Hae-min's parents were extremely surprised when they learned he took the bus and took his bike to school and walked their daughter home every night then took a 3 hour bike ride back home.
Suno worked two part time jobs. He worked in a pizza shop since he was 15 as a secret then took morning classes at the college and worked in a convenient store late at night.
He didn't tell Hae-min however. He was honestly a bit embarrassed. She was rich and could get and do anything she wanted. Suno thought if she knew she was dating someone with two jobs she'd freak and leave him.
Clearly that wasn't the case. Instead she sent a car to take him to and from and even payed for him to live on campus instead. Sometimes suno thinks back to what if Hae-min wasn't as nice as she was. Where would he be?
He definitely wouldn't have finished college debt free or lived in a gorgeous home with a beautiful wife and daughter. Would his business be anywhere? Would he make the millions he made now?
The answer was no. Hae-min never threw it in his face however. How much of his life he actually owed her was grim. Hae-min never even thought about it because she loved him.
Hae-min looked down to see her daughter rubbing her eyes. "Excuse me everyone, i have to put Sowon to sleep" Suno beat her to it. He stood and picked up his daughter, she lazily waved her hand as to say goodnight.
Hae-min stood up as well "Thank you for the meal. Good night everyone" she bowed her head. "You're leaving too? Is one parent not enough to put a child to bed?" Her mother spoke up.
"Sowon can't sleep if her father doesn't tuck her in and i don't sing to her. Same with Geon-woo, he can't sleep without Soo-Cheol" She explained. Her brother gained a dopey smile at the mention of his precious son.
Hae-min's heels clicked as she walked away. She bowed her head slightly to the cooks and continued inside to her husband and child.
