Daryl turned down one of the subdivisions and I saw a couple of houses with playsets and toys in the yards. Daryl pulled over to the side of the road and I hopped off the bike. A few stray walkers heard the bike and made their way over to us. They looked old since they had limbs actively falling off as they walked over to us. Daryl nailed a couple of them in the head with his crossbow and I smoothly walked up to one and stabbed it right through the temple. Daryl looked a me surprised at how calm I was. " I'm better with these things now in close combat. I had to protect Lori in the prison and I didn't freeze, so I think I'm getting better," I said walking over to Daryl as he pulled the arrows out of the walker's eyesockets. He stood up and kissed my forehead, " I'm proud of you. Now lets find this baby her formula," he said as we walked through the front door of one of the houses.
We sneaked around the house trying to be as quiet as possible. I walked into the kitchen opening up the cupboards to find multiple containers of baby formula that were unopened. Next to the formula were baby bottles that looked like they had just been cleaned. Perfect this should last the baby a while. Daryl opened a pantry door to find an opossum hissing at him. He shot the little guy, "Hello dinner." Ugh I'm sick of eating wild animals like squirrels, raccoons, and opossums, but we need to eat.
"You can put that in your bag, I'm not carrying that," I said walking out of the house and back to his bike. I heard Daryl chuckle before getting on his bike, "C'mon sweetheart, it's just a little opossum and plus your bag is bigger," he said trying to convince me to carry the opossum.
"If he's just a "little opossum" then he should fit in your bag nicely," I said kissing his cheek and closing my bag so he can't throw the opossum in there. He snickered before starting his bike and taking off down the road. A few walkers tried to follow us, but couldn't keep up.
On the drive back I couldn't help but think about the baby formula I found. That it was unopened and there were cleaned baby bottles next to it. A family just had a baby and had a stock of formula ready for their newborn, but never got to use it. It made me a little sad, thinking about the horrors the walkers have caused. I only hope that they escaped with their child and left everything behind and are still out there surviving.
I was lost in my thoughts, but quickly snapped out of them when we pulled up to the prison gates. "They're back!" I heard Glenn yell as he opened the gate letting us through. A few of the walkers outside the gate almost got through but thankfully Glenn closed the gate before they could get in.
We ran up to the prison and opened the door to cell block C to see all of our friends sitting around waiting for us. "How's she doing?" Daryl asked setting his bag down and immediately walked over to Beth putting his arms out so that Beth could hand the baby over to him.
I opened up my bag grabbed one of the bottles and started filling it with formula and water. I mixed it well before handing it over to Daryl as he tried to soothe the crying child. She immediately stopped crying when Daryl fed her the bottle. It was such a sweet sight to see. Daryl showing his soft side with the baby melted my heart. There is something just so attractive when a man shows how gentle and soft he is with a baby. If only we could have that one day, but this world isn't meant for a happy family life anymore.
" She got a name yet?" Daryl asked looking around at the group and more specifically Carl because he was the only family the baby had at the moment since Rick was off killing walkers.
"Not yet. But I was thinking maybe Sophia?.. then there's Carol...Andrea...Amy... Lori. I don't know," Carl whispered as a wave of sadness took over realizing all the people we had lost.
"You like that? Huh?" Daryl said talking to the baby as he swayed side to side, "Little ass-kicker," he called her and looked up at everyone, "Right? That's a good name right?" He said with a smile before looking back down at the little girl. Everyone giggled and had a smile on their face at the funny name Daryl gave the baby. Man he would make a great father.
