It had been a couple of days since the CDC, but it just passed by in a blur for me. I didn't talk to many people, and I wasn't much help, other than caring for Muffin. We were on the road again heading down a four-lane highway when the RV's radiator hose shot again.
Shane, Austin, and I were in our van now, we decided that after the CDC we would leave some of the cars behind to save on gas. We all got out of the car including Muffin, who I held in my arms. The highway was filled with cars some with the dead still alive, the dead that were dead, and not a monster.
We walked up to the RV which was smoking a little bit, "I said it, didn't I say it? A thousand times dead in the water." Dale said examining the RV.
"Problem Dale?" Shane asked a little bit sarcastically.
"Just a small matter of being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no hope of.." He stopped himself now realizing how many cars were around that may have a hose to fix the RV. "Okay, that was dumb."
"If you can't find a radiator hose then.."
"Whole bunch of stuff we can find," Daryl commented as he began to dig through an open trunk of a car. I got lost in thought as the others began commenting about finding food and water. I was staring at Daryl's back, he was wearing a vest with angel wings on it. I got lost in thought about that. It reminded me of a guardian angel, but then I thought bout seeing a vest like that before when I was directing a funeral for a bike lover.
He was buried with that vest, his mother said that he had survived a bad motorcycle accident and that when that happens some bikers put wings on their vests to symbolize their survival. Sadly her son passed away from cancer instead.
"Y/N?" I looked over at Dale who had noticed me staring off into space.
"Are you okay?" I just smiled and nodded my head kissing the top of Muffin's head.
"Umm, Can I put Muffin in the back room of the RV? So that he is safe?"
"Of course, I will help you get him set up back there." I smiled as he walked back with me to the car, he grabbed the food and bowls that I was using for the cat, and I had an empty container in the trunk that I used for Muffin during the night. I had been putting grass and dirt in it because, well, litter was a little bit hard to find and not exactly a necessity. Dale and I walked back to the RV getting Muffin set up in the back and cracking the windows so that he wouldn't suffocate from the hot weather.
After we finished setting Muffin up, we closed the door to the back room and started to head back out. "Wait, Y/N, let me talk to you for a second." I stopped and turned around looking at him.
"Are you okay?" I nodded my head.
"Y/N, from what I understand Tyler was like the father you lost, I know that's difficult, if, if you need to talk or anything I'm here." I only nodded smiling at him and stepped out of the RV starting to look through the cars, for anything that might be useful.
I grabbed a suitcase and began stuffing some clothes into it, all mine were gone and lost to the CDC. Some of the other grabbed their stuff, but I just wanted out. I thought back to how I should have stayed behind with Tyler, maybe I could have convinced him to keep going, and maybe if I wasn't so scared he would still be here.
I brought the suitcase back and put it into the van turning back to go look for food. I began walking down the road a little bit further than everyone else. I started looking through a car T-dog was siphoning gas from, spotting some canned food items and putting them in a bag I had found.
I started to walk further down the road when suddenly I heard someone whistle from behind me, I turned and saw it was Austin who was moving his hands. I didn't understand why until I saw the walker behind him. I froze for a second before I felt someone push me down and push me under a car. It was Daryl, he put his finger to his mouth telling me to stay quiet as he went down the road hiding behind cars, trying to get someone. I saw then that he was trying to get to T-Dog.
