I sat and watched the barn under an old oak tree from a distance. I wasn't watching it to keep an eye out, we would be dead by now if the dead could escape, I was watching it thinking about the lives the people inside once had. Maybe, Hershel was right, maybe these people were sick, maybe they weren't dead at all. I continued to think about that theory shaking my head.
"If they were sick people they wouldn't have ended up in our prep room, Molly Alwyn was pronounced dead by a team of doctors, they aren't sick, they are dead," I thought out loud.
"What on earth are you talking about?" Austin's voice sounded from behind me, I was too deep in thought to have heard his footsteps, if he were one of the dead maybe I would have been dead too.
"Just thinking," I answered as I continued to pick grass out of the ground. He nodded sitting on the ground beside me.
"Look, I'm sorry for yesterday, I was just worried about you,"
"Oh, it's okay, I know we are all going through a lot right now it gets overwhelming at times."
"I want to tell you something y/n." He said grabbing my hand. I looked at him, looking into his eyes. I noticed how dark his eyes were, they reminded me of darkness, not the good kind of darkness, the kind you feel when all the lights are off in the house at night and you constantly feel as if something is behind you. I swallowed.
"I really, love you," He said with a smile, "You are so beautiful, and I just wanted you to know that." I gave a smile, did I love him though?
"You don't gotta say it back, just know that I actually do love and care for you, unlike these people here okay? I'm gonna take care of you, you just gotta start listening to me okay? All I want is for you to be safe."
"How do you know they don't?" He was shocked at that question.
"How do I?" He laughed, "Y/N, just trust me okay?"
I just nodded not wanting to ask any more questions, I then saw Rick walk out of the house heading towards the barn where Shane was on watch.
"I'm gonna try to talk to Hershel, see if I can talk to him in a different way." Austin nodded watching me as I walked off to the house.
"Hershel?" I yell out a bit not too loud but enough to catch his attention if he was still inside.
"Y/N? I'm in the kitchen!" I followed his voice walking to the kitchen, Maggie was beginning to make herself a sandwich.
"What can we do for you?"
"Hershel, I wanted to talk to you about my thoughts on the barn, I know the others are strangers and all, but I was hoping you could give a listen to me. Given that this situation is within my job description?"
"You aren't a doctor, you are the opposite."
"That I am, I just want to know why you think those people are still alive. Can you explain that to me?" He looked at me for a moment.
"1st Thessalonians 4, 16 through 17, 'For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.'"
I nodded understanding his point a bit, "Hershel, a trumpet never sounded though, I have watched people come back from the dead after dying in front of my eyes, the people of the Lord would never attack the ones still living." Hershel looked at me studying me for a moment.
"Let me ask you something, you are a veterinarian correct?" He nodded, "Ever seen a rapid dog?"
He looked at me for a moment, "A few I suppose, but whats that got to do with anything?"
