I'm not ill, I'm twisted.
I just love it when they're
calling me to pierce their skin
with my knife, and paint
my canvas with their blood.

Two months into my stint as a CS specialist at Nexus Law Firm, and not a single document has gone missing. It's a small victory, but it feels like a cornerstone in rebuilding my family's shattered world. Yesterday, Dad's old manager visited us, delivering news that felt like a lifeline thrown into our sinking ship. NeuraLife Pharmaceuticals, the company my father once dedicated his life, has been reborn. It's now Jinshi's leading drug and pain management powerhouse. The rise of NeuraLife was as meteoric as its fall after Dad's death, a collapse cloaked in mystery.
But the real shock came when the manager revealed that my father had been the Vice-Chairman of NeuraLife, a secret he took to his grave. For two years, he held this power, and now, by the terms of his contract, that mantle falls to me.
I felt like I was living in a dream. Why would Dad keep such a monumental secret? The revelation wrapped itself around my bones, a new enigma adding weight to the grief I carried.
'Um, well, I still need time to discuss it with my sisters since—'
'It's completely fine, Ms. Park. Just call me after you've made your decision, yeah?'
His kindness had always been a constant, a buoy in our stormy sea. Though he couldn't support us financially, his emotional presence was invaluable. 'Sure.'
With that, he left, and I opened my laptop. 'NeuraLife Pharmaceuticals... Let's see what you've been up to,' I muttered, diving into the digital abyss. Articles about the industry were cryptic, shrouded in corporate jargon and veiled implications. But why had Dad kept such a crucial part of his life hidden? And the fact that he and Mom were murdered... the mystery gnawed at me.
Even if I wanted to work at NeuraLife, could I survive there? The thought of stepping into that world made me feel like a small fish in a shark tank. I called the manager. 'Um, can I transfer my position to Ava?'
He paused, considering. 'I'll let you know in a bit.'
I hung up and continued reading, my mind a tangled web of questions and fears. Just then, Jane came home, breezing past me as usual. 'Jane, wait!'
She didn't stop, forcing me to follow her upstairs. 'Can you stop ignoring me?' My voice cracked with the weight of unspoken grief.
She stood there, a silent wall of resentment. 'Jane! I'm talking to you.'
'But I'm not,' she replied coldly, shrugging off my touch. Desperation clawed at my heart as I grabbed her again. 'Why are you being like this?'
'You don't know why?' She looked at me, her eyes twitching with rage. 'You don't fucking know?'
