Anthony Yen's confession weighed heavily in the room, the tension thick enough to cut. The confidence he once exuded had crumbled, leaving behind a man desperate and cornered. I could see the internal struggle in his eyes—the fear, the regret, the realization of how deeply entangled he was in a web of corruption.
'I had no choice,' Yen's voice wavered, his hands trembling slightly. 'They control everything. If I didn't comply, they would have destroyed me, my company, my family...everything.'
My mind raced. This was more than just a case of corporate fraud. The Black Spider Society was deeply embedded in every layer of power, thriving on manipulation and fear. But just as I was about to push Yen for more details, Lu Si Cheng stepped forward, his demeanor calm, almost detached.
I scoffed internally. Motherfucker.
'Mr. Yen,' Lu Si Cheng began, his voice a controlled whisper, 'we understand your situation. Cooperating with us is your best chance to protect yourself and your loved ones.'
My eyes narrowed. I recognized Lu Si Cheng's tactic—offering calm reassurances to lull Yen into a false sense of security. But something about his approach felt off, too calculated, too...cold. Was Lu Si Cheng genuinely trying to help Yen, or was he just playing his part to keep the situation under control for his own purposes?
Yen hesitated, his gaze darting between meand Lu Si Cheng, trying to decide who was the greater threat. Finally, he nodded, defeated. 'I'll tell you everything I know,' he said, voice barely above a whisper. 'But you have to promise...no one else can know. If the Black Spider Society finds out I talked—'
'They won't,' Lu cut in smoothly. 'We'll make sure of it.'
My stomach churned. There was that unsettling undercurrent again—something in Lu Si Cheng's tone that made me question his true intentions. But I held my tongue for now. This wasn't the moment to confront him—not when we were so close to cracking the case wide open.
Back at the Nexus Law Firm, I couldn't shake the growing unease that gnawed at me. As we walked through the pristine corridors, Lu Si Cheng remained as stoic as ever, his focus unbroken. But my thoughts were a whirlwind of doubts and suspicions.
'You seemed eager to keep him quiet,' I finally broke the silence, my tone sharp.
Lu Si Cheng didn't break stride. 'The goal is to resolve the case without unnecessary complications.'
'Unnecessary complications?' my voice echoed, frustration bubbling to the surface. 'We're dealing with a criminal syndicate, and you're worried about keeping things quiet?'
