I finished poring over the document and replaying the gruesome images of my grandparents' murder since my arrival at Nexus. Each viewing felt like a relentless loop, the same haunting images seared into my mind.

Lu Si Cheng sat before me, absorbed in the towering device that likely held his latest cases—or more accurately, his latest injustices. He was just another cog in the criminal machine, aiding those scum to evade the consequences of their corruption. When I first joined, I harbored hope of cracking the case of my grandparents' murder, but I was met with disappointment. Each day spent idling next to Lu Si Cheng was a painful reminder of my impotence. He would smirk at the criminals who trafficked innocent lives, a chilling nonchalance about the horror he facilitated.

'Don't you even feel pity for those innocent children?' I demanded, frustration making my voice sharp.

He glanced up from the scene we went, his tone as cold and indifferent as ever. 'I do. But I don't let it bother me.'

'Why, Lu Si Cheng? Why don't you care? What if it were your child?' I gripped his collar, shaking him in my desperation.

He shrugged off my hand with a practiced ease. 'Rachel, get out of my way.' His eyes locked onto mine with a detached resolve. 'We couldn't catch them.'

With that, he turned his back, walking toward the car as the traffickers spirited the children away. My heart pounded, a frantic rhythm against my ribs, knowing I'd allowed those traffickers to escape. I could've done something—anything—but I didn't. Instead, I had become a puppet, dancing to Lu Si Cheng's manipulative tune.

Those sleepless nights haunted me with visions of the victims' faces, guilt and terror gnawing at my insides. The nightmares were relentless, a visceral reminder of my failure. Lu Si Cheng, with his polished veneer, seemed an unlikely villain, yet here he was, entangled in the filthiest of enterprises.

FROM LILI: Sissy, I think you should take a break.

FROM LILI: Maybe, then you'll be able to concentrate better...

FROM LILI: And, Lu Si Cheng? He's an asshole! I hate him now so much.

FROM LILI: RACHEL WANG, STOP LOOKING AT THE HANJU HOMICIDE NOW!

My phone buzzed insistently, a barrage of beeps heralding a text from Lili. Her concern for my well-being was as unrelenting as the storm raging outside, especially with Ming teetering on the edge of life, barely clinging to existence.
