The morning sun filtered through the towering glass walls of Nexus Law Firm, casting a pale glow over the bustling city below. The quiet hum of the city's heartbeat was a stark contrast to the tension simmering within the firm's polished corridors. I stood in front of the large windows, the weight of my new assignment pressing down on my shoulders like a stone. It wasn't just another case; it was my first real opportunity to prove myself, to break free from the shadows of my past, and to establish myself as more than just a survivor. I was determined to show everyone, including myself, that I could handle this—no matter what it took.

Even though I mentally fucked up at what's happening lately, I still have to work to help these people out. Ugh, not to mention that I found absolutely nothing in that attic last night I spent hours searching except a photo album. I haven't gotten the chance to look through it yet.

What a waste of my time. Man, I thought there were the phantoms for real.

My meeting with the new detective was delayed, Mr. Jun said that the detective needed a few days more as he just landed in Jinshi. I've got a bad feeling about this. I hummed to myself.

Whatever nutcase, you've bad feelings about everything.

Behind me, Lu Si Cheng was flipping through the file I had been handed the last day. His movements were as calm and deliberate as ever, his expression unreadable. It was as if the gravity of the situation didn't faze him in the slightest. To him, this was just another day at the office. Another puzzle to be solved, another chess game to be won. His nonchalance irritated me, but I tried to push it aside. There was no time to be annoyed with my partner; I had a job to do.

'The client is Luminar Technologies,' Lu Si Cheng's voice was cool and steady, like the calm before a storm. 'They're accused of embezzling millions in company funds. The CEO, Anthony Yen, claims it's all a misunderstanding—a mix-up in the accounts.'

I raised an eyebrow, still staring out at the city below. 'A misunderstanding that just happens to involve millions of dollars? Sounds like a load of crap to me.'

Lu Si Cheng didn't bother to look up from the file. 'That's what we're here to find out. The board wants us to clear this up as quietly as possible.'

'Quietly,' My voice echoed, finally turning to face him. 'Because they don't want anyone digging too deep, right?'

Lu Si Cheng's gaze flicked up to meet mine, just for a moment. There was something in his eyes—something cold and calculating. 'That's one way to look at it.'
