After Scarlett had woken up a twitching Sage, the girl went upstairs to freshen up. The only thing Scarlett had wanted to do was to scoop the girl up and hold her but she knew she couldn't. She had looked so scared as she looked around the room for something that wasn't there. As Scarlett and Colin were sitting downstairs in the living room talking, the door flew open and a small voice called through the house.
"Mommy?"
Scarlett flew on to her feet and rushed to the front door. A small, nine year old girl was standing in the doorway. Her blonde hair was tied back in a French braid and she was wearing a purple dress.
"Mommy!" She squealed again and jumped into Scarlett's opens arms.
"Hi baby, how have you been?" Scarlett muffled into Rose's hair.
"I'm good, nana and poppop are sick though." The nine year old said as her mother put her down.
"Yeah I've heard." Scarlett said just as her mother appeared in the doorway with a little boy behind her.
"Hi Mom." Scarlett smiled and picked up Cosmo. "Hey baby."
"Sorry." Melanie apologized and sighed. "I know you really needed the help and-"
"-it's fine Mom." Scarlett reassured her.
"Mommy, where's the girl?" Rose asked, halfway up the stairs.
"I think she's upstairs in the old guest room." Scarlett said. "But she might need to be on her own for a while."
Rose didn't listen though and thundered up the stairs as fast as her little legs could go.
"Can you hold Cosmo?" Scarlett asked her husband who joined them before handing him their son and rushing upstairs.
She heard Rose's voice coming from Sage's room and came just in time for Rose to open the closed door.
"Hi." She heard her younger daughter say. "Are you Sage?"
Scarlett stopped in the doorway as Sage nodded and smiled.
"Oh em geee!" Rose squealed. "That's so fun. I'm Rose."
Sage's eyes went from Rose to Scarlett's and back to Rose again before giving her a thumbs up.
"Rose," Scarlett stepped in, "Sage is a very nice girl but she doesn't talk."
Rose turned around and frowned at her mother.
"Why is that?" She questioned, her blue eyes glittering.
The girl didn't wait for a response though. She simply spun around to face Sage.
"Have you lost your voice from being sick? My poppop lost his voice from being sick once."
They both watched as Sage sat in her bed and thought for a second. She nodded hesitantly with a sad face.
"Oh," Rose said, "okay!"
She did a thumbs up before darting over and jumping into bed and sitting down next to Sage.
"What are you doing?" The girl asked, holding on to the last word and dragging it out.
Sage held up her book and Rose sighed.
"Boring." She called, forcing herself onto Sage's lap.
The older girl visibly flinched at the sudden contact and Scarlett instantly felt guilty.
"Sage, can you play dolls with me?" Rose queried, looking up at the older girl.
"Maybe later hun?" Scarlett called and Rose nodded.
