Nothing.

For a moment, Sage felt nothing.

For her entire life, she had lived with this gaping hole in her chest, left by the person that was supposed to stay by her side for everything. But now, that person was here.

Scarlett.

Her Mom.

They were one and the same.

Rose was her sister and Cosmo her brother.

She had a family.

Sage tore her eyes away from the letter so that she could look at Scarlett. Now she realised why the woman's eyes were so familiar. Because they were identical to hers. A lone tear rolled down Scarlett's cheek before getting caught in the crook of her mouth.

Her Mom.

The woman sitting in front of her was her Mom.

"I'm sorry that I didn't tell you straight away." Scarlett whispered as another tear rolled down her cheek.

Sage pursed her lips, dropping her eyes to her lap. She needed to think.

"I know you're probably angry at me and I deserve it, but I want you to know that I'll never let you go again." A sniffle made Scarlett pause. "I made a mistake, and I'll spend every day we have together, making up for that."

Silence.

Sage felt Scarlett stand up and heard as she walked towards the door. She didn't want her to leave, quite the opposite.

Before she could think about she was doing she opened her mouth and silently said "No, stay."

Her words came out raspy but the lisp was gone.

The woman stopped dead in her tracks and turned to face Sage. Tears brimmed in the corners of her green eyes.

She approached her with caution, like you would a scared animal. When she finally sat down on Sage's bed she smiled, a sad one.

"I'm sorry baby, I'm so very sorry." She cried, the tears now falling freely.

"Can I give you a hug?"

Sage nodded and Scarlett wrapped her in an embrace. A sob ripped through Sage. A hollow, broken sound that shattered her mother's heart.

"I'm so sorry Sage." Scarlett's hand found the back of her head as Sage hid her face in the crook of Scarlett's neck. "I'm so sorry my sweet girl, I should never have left you."

Sage clung to Scarlett as she was moved onto her lap. The girls sobs soon turned to small whimpers. When Scarlett lifted her head off of her shoulder to look at her, she had a smile resting on her lips.

"You spoke." She stated, wiping a tear from Sage's cheek with her thumb and chuckling lightly.

Sage nodded, sinking into her touch.

Scarlett reached up with her other hand to caress Sage's cheek.

"My beautiful girl." She sniveled as her eyes welled over once again. "My firstborn."

"I have looked for you for fifteen years." Scarlett continued. "I'm so sorry for leaving you."

A comfortable silence fell between them. Scarlett pulled the girl back into her arms and soon enough she fell asleep.

Scarlett made her way downstairs when she was certain that Sage was asleep. She was met with the smell of chicken and the sight of Colin standing in the kitchen, dressed in his pink apron. She glanced over into the living room to see her younger daughter and son on the cough, watching a cartoon.
