September 17th 2024A slimmer of golden sunlight peered through the white curtains, casting a warm glow across the room. Sage sat up, raising her arms above her head in a stretch. She yawned before reaching for her phone. Downstairs, she could hear hushed voices but she didn't really acknowledge them. Mindlessly, the girl scrolled on her phone for a few minutes, not really thinking about the fact that it was her birthday today.
All of a sudden, her bedroom door creaked open and in came her entire family. When they all got inside, Colin counted to three and everyone started singing the happy birthday song. The girl couldn't help but blush as they all approached her in bed.
"Happy birthday sissy!" Cosmo squealed when they finished their song.
"Thank you." Sage smiled, meeting her mother's eyes.
In Scarlett's hands was a chocolate cake with sixteen candles on, which were all lit. Cosmo and Rose carried one present each while Colin carried the rest of them.
"Happy birthday my sweet girl." Scarlett beamed, placing down the cake on Sage's nightstand. "Blow out the candles and make a wish."
Make a wish.
But what was there to wish for? Sage already had everything she could ever want. Nevertheless, she blew out the candles and received squeals from her younger siblings in response.
Rose jumped up into Sage's bed and snuggled up to her sisters side before pushing her present into her sister's hands.
"Open mine first." She ordered, watching as her sister carefully unwrapped her present.
Inside was a heart shaped pendant in silver that Sage quickly hung around her neck.
"I love it, thank you Rose."
Her family surrounded her as she unwrapped present after present. A drawing from Cosmo, a pair of noice cancelling headphones, three new hoodies, a few dresses, and a few bags of sweets.
"Here," Colin said, handing Sage an envelope, "open mine next."
Sage accepted it, ripping it at the top and pulling out two small papers.
"It's tickets to 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'." Colin explained, sounding a bit nervous but exited at the same time. "I thought you and I could go see it together."
Smiling, she looked up at him.
"I'd love to, thanks Dad."
Colin teared up at her words, leaning down and engulfing her in a hug. Scarlett joined them and soon even Cosmo and Rose joined them too.
"Okay," Scarlett said after they all let go of Sage, "mine now."
She handed her a box wrapped up in a Sage green paper with a cheeky grin. Sage accepted the box with a questioning look on her face.
"I hope it's okay." Her mother said, "I don't know a lot about that stuff."
The girl unboxed a Canon EOS R100 camera with two different lenses. Her mouth dropped.
"Mom this is expensive." She stuttered. "I can't accept this."
"You can and you will." Her mother retorted. "I know how much you like photography, so I thought you needed something to help with that."
