Three hard thumps pulled Scarlett from her thoughts. She perked her head up from her laptop and frowned. It was after eleven so it was way too late for any of Colin's weird friends to come and visit. The person knocked on the door again. Whatever it was about, it sounded urgent.
"Coming!" She called, standing up and leaving the warmth of her fluffy blanket on the couch.
Scarlett slipped her feet into her fluffy slippers and walked through the living room, out to the foyer.
The foyer, adorned in photos of Cosmo, Rose and Sage, was dimly lit by one single light on a dresser. The newest photo hung on the right side of the door. It was taken on Sage's birthday, with the birthday girl in the middle and her two younger siblings in her lap. Sage was smiling, her blonde hair cascading down her front whilst Cosmo and Rose were giggling hysterically. The single picture captured a moment in time they would never get back. A happy moment. But Sage wasn't home anymore. The state had taken her into custody a week ago and Scarlett wasn't allowed to contact her.
It had been eight days since she'd last seen Sage and somehow it hurt more than giving her up the first time. Because now she wasn't just a thought or an idea. Now, she was a real person with real feelings. They had a relationship, a bond. Sage was hers. So when some social worker had called and told her that Sage wasn't coming home for the foreseeable future, Scarlett had gone into a frenzy. Every day since then, Scarlett and her lawyers had worked around the clock to bring her home. But because she had given her daughter up when she was an infant, it was hard to get her back. They were met with mountains of paperwork they couldn't move around.
The person at the front door pounded on the door again. Scarlett's heart clenched in her chest because this situation didn't feel right. She kept the door chained and slowly turned the lock from the inside. When her eyes fell on the person in front of her, her heart fell and her breath hitched in her throat.
It was Daniel.
The man who ruined her life.
Daniel Hawthorne, with his thinning hair and slight stubble, was standing in front of her. His sharp face carrying a scowl.
Scarlett couldn't breathe. Her heart pounded so hard in her chest that it felt like her ribs were cracking. He couldn't be here.
"What are you doing here?" She managed to say, her voice wobbling almost as much as her legs.
"Sage." He spat, like that would explain why he was there.
Scarlett frowned. What did he mean by that. Her hand found the door handle so that she could slam the door shut if she needed to.
"What do you mean?" She questioned and watching as he crossed his arms.
"Is Sage here?"
Her heart dropped. What did he mean by that?
"Why?" She pushed, her heart still pounding.
"She ran away from home." He spat at her, brown eyes narrowing.
What did he mean she 'ran away from home'? She was in a government home. Right?
"W-what do you mean home?" She managed to say, her throat so tight she almost couldn't breathe.
"She ran away from my house and I know she's here Scarlett."
That cleared up everything. Her heart sank like a stone in her chest, her eyes misting over.
"She's been staying with you for the past week?" She asked, watching as he rolled his eyes and groaned.
"Yes-" he froze when something crept up behind Scarlett.
It was Colin, dressed in his pajamas from Prada and a pair of his pink fluffy slippers.
"What's going on Scarlett? Who is this?" He put his hand on her shoulder, looking between Daniel and Scarlett.
Daniel didn't hesitate, his scowl growing even deeper. He scoffed, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms over his chest. His entire presence made Scarlett want to run and hide forever.
"This is Sage's father." She mumbled, turning to look at her husband for a split second.
Colin's face darkened, his hand on Scarlett's shoulder tensing up. Nostrils flared and eyes blazing, he gently pushed her away from the cracked door.
"What the hell are you doing here?" He hissed at Daniel, his voice filled with so much hate for a man he'd never even seen before.
"Calm down," Daniel retorted. "Listen I don't know what she's told you about me but-"
"Oh she's told me enough." Her husband seethed, gripping the door handle so hard that his knuckles whitened.
In response, Daniel rolled his eyes like a bratty teenager.
"Sage," Scarlett stuttered, her voice strained and raw. "He took Sage."
That was all it took for Colin to bubble over. Scarlett zoned out but she could comprehend snippets.
"If you ever contact us, I will come after you personally."
"Don't you dare take our daughter away from us."
Sage was gone.
Disappeared.
Lost.
Just as she'd been only a few months ago.
Scarlett had lost her daughter for the second time.
And it hurt more than she could even think of. Sharp stabbing pains through her heart.
Sage
Gone
Forever?
No.
They had found each other before and they'll do that again.
They had to.
The front door slammed shut and Colin rushed over to his wife. He ran his hands over her arms, angry tears glistening in the corners of his eyes.
"Scarlett." He called and his voice almost echoed through her head.
"Scarlett?"
His hand met her cheek in a gentle stroke.
"Listen to me. You need to breathe."
But she couldn't.
Because he had gotten to Sage.
And she hadn't known.
"It's my fault." She croaked, finally getting a sound through her dry throat. "It's my fault."
Colin cried as he shook his head. "No, it's not. It never was and will never be. It's his fault."
He gently tilted her head so that their eyes met.
"We will get our daughter back. You have my word."
