Sage had her heart in her throat as her mother sat before her, seemingly not okay."Mom?" She hesitated, her heart slamming against her ribs so hard it hurt.
"Listen," Scarlett said, putting a hand on Sage's, "I'll do everything in my power to make this right."
Sage searched her face for any kind of hesitation but only found determination.
"But what about my custody?" She found herself asking, the words pouring out of her mouth before she could stop herself.
Her mother's face visibly dropped. She pursed her lips and let out a sharp breath.
"I don't know."

Scarlett left the house to meet with her lawyers and didn't come home in the evening. She claimed she needed space but Sage knew the real reason. Scarlett needed to get away from her. And that was okay. She wouldn't want to be here if she were her mother.
Sage walked around her room. She'd already flicked the light switch on and off multiple times but it didn't satisfy her. Then she'd rearranged the books in her bookshelf, remade her bed five times and cleaned her bathroom. And yet her body itched for more. So she ended up at the light switch again.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
It still wasn't enough.
Why wasn't it enough?
The girl placed herself on her bed. Her fingers climbed to her hairline. She needed something, anything, to made that itch go away. And even though she'd promised herself that she'd never do it again, she wound a strand of hair around her finger and tugged on it. With a slight 'pop', the strand gave way and released from her scalp. A weird feeling of satisfaction ran through her veins. Warm and disgusting.
She repeated that action again.
Again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
Until the itching stopped.
Until her fingers were coated in crimson red.
Until she felt better.
Until she didn't feel better anymore.

Scarlett returned two days later with a bunch of legal documents and files. She shut herself inside her study to 'work'.
And she hadn't even talked to Sage since the evening everything came crashing down.
Sage knew deep down what her mother felt.
