40 years later

"That's how you and grandma met?"

"It's a beautiful story isn't it?" I acknowledge, flipping over the pages of Elena's old scrapbook.

"Didn't you have phones back then? Why are these pictures on paper?" Matilda asks.

"Being a photographer, your grandma always loved to take pictures. She would put them on these diaries where she would write a caption to all of them." I tell her. "I think she just wanted to remember these moments forever."

"What is that?" Matilda asks pointing at my favourite picture with Elena.

The picture was taken 39 years ago, on the day of our wedding.

To this day, I still can't believe she actually agreed to marry me. I can't believe she chose me to grow old with and to be the father of her children.

"That's when me and Grandma Elena got married, sweetie." I tell her. "I was really happy that day. I couldn't believe she actually was there, marrying me."

"Neither could I. I was going crazy that year. Your proposal? Me saying yes? It was completely out of nowhere." Elena says, coming from the kitchen of our house and planting a kiss on my lips.

"Ewwwww" Matilda pretends to be sick.

"Your grandma was in love with me from day one, you know? Love at first sight."

"Don't lie to the kid, Theodore."

After having kids, having them leave the house, both of us retiring, we bought a house in Silver Lake, a quiet small town. New York wasn't for us anymore, all the noise, all the partying, it felt like we were too old to be there so we moved here. Oliver lives with Gigi on the house next to ours and we have dinner all together every day.

We lived a happy life. We're still living it. The best part? I'm facing every challenge with the love of my life by my side and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I was right from day one, Elena Sanchez is the love of my life. Even at 64 years old.
