SPOILERS FOR FONTAINE ARCHON QUEST!
Furina stared at the picture frame in her hand, smiling softly. It was a photo taken by Navia a while back, when the three of you had gotten together for tea. Your face held such a comfortable, sincere smile. Placing the frame back on the shelf, she gazed out her window and up into the sky. How far away the centuries of pretending to be Focalors felt, when in reality it had only been half a year.
So much had changed. Furina, too, had changed in plenty of ways. She now could cook several dishes that weren't macaroni, had a reliable job, and the people of Poisson didn't hate her as much. But most of all, she was happier. For five hundred years, she had played the essential role of "Focalors, the God of Justice!"
It had been so difficult. Every night had been agonizingly restless, filled with constant hope that it was going to be over soon and constant dread for the consequences that would come if she slipped up.
But now it was all over. She could just be Furina. She had a wonderful friend- you, of course- and every day she spent with you was sure to be exciting and memorable. She often stopped by the place you borrowed from the Spina di Rosula in the Fleuve Cendre, and you two would chat, play TGC or go out into the Court of Fontaine together. She found it to be one of the best parts of her day, and was eternally grateful to you for helping her to become the happier, more stable person that she was.
But that all changed one day. She hadn't seen you for a week. She'd tried pretty much everything in the book- bringing you food, banging unceremoniously on your door, and even throwing paper planes at your window. But all her efforts had been in vain. Sighing as another plane spiraled to the ground of the Fleuve Cendre, she turned and headed back to her place. I wonder what's gotten into him. I hope he's okay.
...
You were not okay.
You hadn't gotten out of bed in days, and Paimon was beginning to get extremely worried about you. "Traveler, don't you want to eat something? You haven't had anything in, like, two whole days! Paimon doesn't know how you can stand it, please, just eat something!" She wailed desperately.
"No thanks, Paimon. Don't worry about me." You rolled over in bed. What's the point? I might as well send the letter now. You thought. Sorry Furina.
"Actually..." You sat up, swinging your legs off the side of the bed. Reaching into a drawer on your nightstand, you pulled out a light blue envelope. "Paimon, I need you to do me a favor. Could you give this letter to Furina?" Your companion rolled her eyes. "What- first emergency food, now Paimon is a mail carrier?! Ugh, but fine! Give it here." She snatched it from your hands and stuck her tongue out at you. You just smiled wearily. "You remember where the address is, right?" You asked.
"Yeah, yeah, Paimon's got it!" She replied. "Thank you, Paimon." You laughed softly. "Sure! See you soon-"
You grabbed her little hand. "I mean it. Thank you." You met her eyes for a moment. "Uhhh... Paimon said sure, right..? You're welcome, Traveler. Paimon'll be back soon, promise!" She smiled, exiting your shared house. Rolling onto your back, you stared up at the ceiling. She's gone. Now's your chance.
You would finally be done. After all this time away from Lumine, you would be free of the title 'The Traveler.' After today, you'd be dead, and you would never have to be put under the stress of finding your sister ever again.
...
Furina's eyes widened as she read through the letter once, twice, three times.
"No. No! Paimon, how long did it take you to get here?!" Her panicked tone worried Paimon greatly. "Uh.. about ten minutes? Why?" The little guide asked. "Shit, shit, shit. Come on, we've gotta go. Now." She grabbed Paimon's hand and rushed out the door.
No no no no no. I can't lose him. I won't lose him.
She could barely hear your travel guide's protests over the rushing of blood in her ears. She slid down the ladder into the Fleuve Cendre, dashing through groups of passersby and even hopping over a railing. She nearly ran into your door when she arrived, anxiously allowing Paimon to let the two of you inside with her spare key.
"Traveler! Where are you?!" She cried desperately. Opening doors at random, she eventually found a blonde figure. He sat on the floor, a sword pressed to his neck. As Furina watched in horror, he took a deep breath, moving the sword a bit further away before-
"NO!"
Furina sent a blast of hydro energy at your hand, causing you to drop the sword. It clattered to the ground, and Furina surged forward to wrap her arms around you. "No, no, no. It's okay, Traveler, it's okay. I'm here." She soothed, tears gathering in her eyes. You gasped in panic. "Furina, I- why are you- I'm sorry, I-" You tried to push her away. The hydro wielder shook her head, holding you closer. "It's all going to be okay. I'm here and I'll always be here for you. I could never imagine a world without my best friend. Please, just stay with me..!" She sobbed.
You noticed the tears streaming down your own face, gathering on your chin and dripping down to the ground. You'd been so close. But Furina... the pain and desperation in her voice tugged at some strings deep in your heart.
And so you decided.
"I.. I will. I'm sorry, Furina, I didn't want this to happen, but..." You trailed off. "You can tell me. I promise I won't judge." Furina promised. You nodded. "I just.. I miss my sister." You hiccuped. "I haven't seen her in so long. And she's always felt like my home, so.. I guess I haven't felt truly safe since I last talked to her. Gods, how long has it been? Centuries, probably." You sighed.
"And I've talked to her maybe once since then. She left me without a hug, without reassurance, without anything to tell me that she still cares about me. It's so painful." You dried off a tear that had fallen onto the back of your hand.
"Oh, no. I'm so sorry. That pain has got to be a lot, hm?" Furina squeezed your hand once, as a gesture of comfort. Truthfully, she'd been through something similar. With no contact from Focalors for over five hundred years, she'd been forced to live day by day in a painfully mundane cycle. "It's not your fault." You sighed. Furina pulled back to look you in the eyes. "I can still feel sad that you're going through this, though. I mean, I can sorta understand, given my.. history. I know how it feels it be cut off from your anchor, of sorts."
You nodded. "Thank you, Furina." Standing up on shaky legs, you pulled her into a tight hug. She accepted it immediately, returning it with just as much force. "You're my best friend." She whispered into your ear. "Please let me care about you."
A small smile flickered on your lips. "I will." You promised. And you meant it.
