HEADS UP! Modern AUs are always just a little different for every writer, so I thought I should share how I do things. In my modern AU, things like youkai, adepti and other mythical creatures still exist. I think of it more as a "Genshin but we give them technology, modern clothes, jobs, etc" type of modern. So Reader is still a kitsune, but they aren't a traveler.
Creeeakk. Click.
The door to your office opened and a certain alchemist slipped into the room. A small smile broke onto his lips as he saw one of your ears twitch. You were laser-focused on your laptop, typing away diligently.
"Love." He murmured as he placed his chin on your head. "It's past bedtime."
You sighed. "I wondered how long it would take before you'd come in here. Estimated about half an hour. It's been.." you glanced at the time in the corner of your laptop. "Two hours. Seems like my calculations aren't doing so well." You turned back to your work without another word.
"Loveeee..." Albedo groaned, petting your ears with his fingertips. "You're not going to get any proper work done if you're too tired to function. Just shut the laptop and come to bed." His hair draped over your face and you smelled his shampoo, soft and warm-smelling, like him. "Five minutes, babe." You did not peel your eyes off the screen.
Albedo huffed. "Your five minutes are going to turn into another hour and you know that, dear. Just save what you're working on and come to bed." Reaching towards your face with both hands, he squished your cheeks affectionately. You knew he was aiming to distract you so that you'd give up and come to bed, but to no avail. You didn't bat an eye even as he pinched ever so slightly. "Why are you like this?" He sighed, removing his hands from your face.
Rolling your eyes, you turned to face him in your swivel chair.
"Why am I like this?? You're really asking me that?" You sighed. He grinned, leaning down and resting his forehead against yours. "As if I'm the workaholic in this relationship- I cannot believe you." You said in mock disbelief. "Are you even aware of how many hours you spend down at the lab? Do you really not know-"
With a small motion, Albedo pressed his lips to yours, smiling softly. You felt heat rushing to your face and ears, and shut your eyes so you wouldn't have to see your partner's teasing gaze.
When you two split and you opened your eyes, you stuck out your bottom lip in frustration. "Are you really pouting right now? After making me wait for you to come to bed for two hours? I think you're the unbelievable one here." Your lover grinned, pinching your nose gently.
Turning back to your desk, you began typing again. You heard him let out a small noise of disappointment and did your best not to burst out laughing.
As cute as he is, I have to get this done before the deadline.
ACK!
Turning back towards him, you saw the alchemist hovering at ear level. "Did you just bite my ear, Albedo?" You deadpanned. He smiled sheepishly. "No. I nibbled. It's a very different action." He replied matter-of-factly. Exhaling heavily, you turned back towards your computer. "If you bite me again, that's another half hour of work." You threatened, and you swore you could hear him shut his mouth.
"Good. You can stay in here with me for ten minutes, and then we can to bed." Albedo rested his chin on your shoulder. "I thought I heard you say five minutes earlier, love. What's the deal with that, hmm?" He murmured sweetly. You didn't indulge in his little game, instead focusing back in on your work.
"Love." He whispered, tugging on the end of your ear.
"Loveeee." Albedo hummed as he repeatedly kissed your cheek.
"Lovely." He placed a hand on your head, just letting it rest there.
"Light of my life perfection incarnate wonderful amazing awesome partner of mine." A soft kiss was pressed to your temple.
You wordlessly clicked the save button in the corner of your writing software, closing the app and shutting your computer. The fans powered off, making your office grow quiet. Albedo grinned as you stood up and stretched out your aching back. "Ten minutes are up, 'Bedo. Bedtime." You glanced at him. He practically leaped for the doorknob, opening the door for you. "Of course, my dear." He smirked as he saw your mildly irritated face.
He trailed after you the whole way to bed, like he thought you would turn and run back to your office to continue working. When you arrived in your bedroom, you immediately pulled off your t-shirt and changed into your pajamas. Just as he beckoned for you to get in bed with him, you made a turn for the bathroom.
"Where are you going?" His pout was audible.
"To wash my face and brush my teeth, darling. My night routine." Your tail twitched slightly. You knew he was asking dumb questions on purpose, just to annoy you.
After taking care of your nighttime needs, you switched off the bathroom light and shut the door. You crawled into bed and were instantly captured by a pair of arms. "I'm. Not. Letting. You. Out. Until. You. Get. A. Good. Night's. Sleep." Albedo punctuated each word with a kiss to the forehead.
"You suck." You grumbled, and he affectionately poked your nose. "Well I'm sorry for caring about your health." Your lover sighed, loosening his grip and rolling onto his back. "I wish you took care of yourself more." He added softly. A frown formed on your lips. "I'm sorry. I really I am. I just get caught up in work, and forget about everything else."
The reason felt silly out loud, but Albedo nodded seriously. "Based on what I've observed about you, that does make sense. You're a very dedicated person, you know? It's quite admirable." He smiled. "It's one of the things that first made me fall head over heels for you."
You reflexively curled up against his side, your interest piqued. "What do you mean?"
"In high school, I noticed you were also a frequent visitor to the library in the mornings. Always studying diligently, no matter what time of year it was. I asked Kaeya if he knew your name, and he did. The morning that I bought you a coffee after introducing myself was probably the most nervous I've ever been." He grinned sheepishly.
You smiled into his shoulder. "You were such a nerd back then. You still are, actually." The correction came faster than his reply.
"Oh, hush. It's bedtime." Albedo huffed dramatically.
"Alright. Nerd."
"Love!"
