When I first created Jake Phillips Jr, Yelena Belova wasn't the only female Marvel character who I wanted Jake to be romantically interested in. Sometimes he'd be romantically interested in She-Hulk, or Carol Danvers, or Gwen Stacy, or even Rogue herself. It usually depends on what mood I'm in since I have a crush on some of these characters too. I'm sure I'm not alone on this. I was actually introduced to the character of Rogue in the live action X-Men films and later the cartoons. A lot of fans agree that two of the best iterations of Rogue would have to be her appearances on the original 1992 X-Men animated series and her appearance in X-Men Evolution, and I'm also willing to include her appearance in X-Men 97, although it is debatable since it's a continuation of the 92 series. A lot of my friends like the goth girl version of Rogue seen in Evolution, and having her be a goth makes perfect sense given her powers. I've always felt bad for Rogue as a kid because I always thought it was sad that whenever she touches people, she absorbs their memories or even powers, which could hurt people. She's one of the many X-Men I have a lot of sympathy for. So I always thought it would be a fun idea to do a fanfiction with Rogue as a mostly main character.
I'm really glad that I watched the 92 animated series to X-Men and the recent continuation as it gives me a good perspective on the character of Rogue. And I'm going to say it, the cartoon is giving me a good reason to appreciate Cyclops as a character. I'm pretty much starting to imagine the voice of Norm Spencer whenever I read an X-Men comic with Scott, (rest in peace Norm) and I think Ray Chase does an amazing job replicating Spencer's voice in the continuation series. He sounds so much like Spencer! But I digress. Now I should point out a few important notes regarding this story. Now I know there are a lot of people who usually ship Rogue with Gambit. And I totally understand why. Rogue and Gambit have such a chemistry that is undeniable, and it's portrayed greatly in the 92 series alongside the '97 revival. And I really liked Channing Tatum's portrayal of Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine. But since this is a fanfiction where Rogue falls in love with my OC, how to handle Gambit was a tough one. So we'll just say that Rogue and Gambit didn't really see each other as lovers and are just friends. Do I think this could make a great "You versus the guy she tells you not to worry about" joke? Yeah, it would. Especially since Remy is handsome, I admit it. But yeah, this isn't a Rogue X Gambit love story, sorry true believers.
Another important detail I want to point out is that this story takes place in 2014, 10 years ago if you would believe it. It's more interesting to have it take place in a certain period, especially since 2014 was the year X-Men Days of Future Past was released in theaters. Having the story take place during a specific year makes it a little easier for me to relate to the characters a bit more. Now Rogue is a bit older than Jake by 2 years, he's 21, she's 23. This Marvel Universe I've established definitely takes elements from both the X-Men animated series from 92 while also taking elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and whatever elements I like.
And one other detail I want to point out, in the comics, Rogue never really had a definitive/official surname up until she married Gambit. For this fanfiction, Rogue's real name will be Anna Marie Zann. Why Zann? It's actually a reference to actress Lenore Zann, the first official voice of Rogue. Everything that makes Rogue sound great because of her sexy accent, we owe to Lenore Zann. She truly made Rogue her own, and I think a lot of voice actresses usually take after her the same way Steve Blum takes after Cal Dodd whenever he voices Wolverine. It felt appropriate to have Rogue's real name be named after another actress that greatly influenced the character.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this Marvel fanfiction. To me, my X-Men!
