The next day, John B, Kiara, Pope, and I are all hanging out at the chateau. JJ left to go surfing an hour ago and we were all going to meet him there later.

I hear a car coming and look out of the porch to see a cop car pulling in front of the house.

"Guys, cops are here," I tell them and we all get up and walk off the porch.

Deputy Shoupe gets o ur of the car and walks toward us "hey kids," he says as he gets closer.

We all say hello then John B continues talking, "what's up, Shoupe?"

"Is JJ here?" He asks us.

We all look at each other and shrug, "no sir," Pope tells him.

"Did he sleep here last night?" Shoupe asks.

I shake my head, "no sir, he said something about going to his dads last night."

Shoupe nods, he can definitely tell that we are lying to him, "will you guys let me know if you see him?"

We all nod our heads and tell him yes then he says goodbye and gets back in his cruiser.

After he leaves we all go inside and put our swimsuits on then grab our boards and head to the beach.

When we get there, JJ is still out on the waves, doing what he does best.

"Let's do this," Kiara says and they all head to the water.

I hang back behind them and when John B asks me what I'm doing I speak, "I think I'm just gonna sit and watch for a little," I tell him.

"You sure?" He asks me.

I nod and they all continue walking to the water. I make myself comfortable on the sand and pull my book out of my bag then start reading.

"Hey, Emery," I hear someone say behind me.

I turn around and see Rafa Cameron walking towards me, "uh, hi, Rafe," I say nicely.

He sits down next to me, "how're you doing?"

I scoot over a little before responding, "I'm fine."

He nods, "good, good... so are you going with Kiara to Midsummers again this year?" He asks me.

"I do every year," I tell him as nicely as I can.

Rafe continues to talk to me for a second and I am as dry as I can be, but he won't just take the hint.

I look over and see JJ walking up the sand towards us.

"Hey, Junie," he looks at Rafe with a stern face, "Rafe."

Rafe nods to him, "hey JJ."

JJ looks back at me, "are you gonna come catch some waves?" He asks.

I quickly nod and jump up, "yeah," I tell him as I grab my board and walk over to him.

We head towards the water and JJ looks back at Rafe before turning back to me, l2)-5 was that about?" He asks me.

I shrug, "I have no idea."

JJ gets quiet then speaks up again, "last one to the water owes the other a twenty." He tells me as he starts running towards the water.

"Oh, you wish!" I yell as I race him to the water.

We all surf for a little then when it gets too dark to the point where we can't surf anymore, we head to The Wreck.

We sit in our usual booth and Kiara's dad brings us a basket for all of us to share.

"Thanks, Mike," I tell him.

"You're welcome, Emery," he tells me with a smile.

"Yeah, thanks," JJ tells him.

"Thanks," John B tells him.

"Thank you," Pope tells him.

Mike just nods them off, "yeah," he says before going back into the kitchen.

We all talk to each other for a while until the bell rings, telling everyone that someone walked into the restaurant.

I look over to see Sarah and her friend Scarlett walking into The Wreck.

Kiara rolls her eyes as she sees them, "she has no right to be here. This is my parent's restaurant."

John B shrugs as he shoves a fry in his mouth, "just ignore her," he tells Kiara.

I notice John B staring at Sarah so I kick him under the table. When he looks at me, I give him a look that tells him to stop.

A few minutes later, Sarah and Scarlett come over to our table.

"Hey, guys," Sarah says to us.

Pope waves and JJ holds up a piece sign. John B is the only one to actually say something, "hey."

Sarah directs her attention to John B, "am I gonna see you tomorrow?"

John B nods, "bright and early."

Sarah nods, "cool." She says before walking away from us.

When the two girls are out of earshot, Kiara scoffs, "why would you get a job for Ward Cameron?"

John B gives her a confused look, "we needed the money." He tells her, motioning between me and him.

Mike comes over a few minutes later and tells us that they are closing soon. He asks Kiara if she is gonna stay and help and she tells him yes.

The rest of us say our goodbyes to Kiara and leave The Wreck.
