They must have been staring at the candle for hours. The flame hadn't moved an inch since the electricity went out, and the deafening silence didn't help the boredom either. The storm had subsided ages ago, but they could still hear the pitter-patter of rain against the roof.
Then the candle flickered, and after came Blake's voice.
"They're either dead or back together."
Bryce looked up from his phone, the hues of the candlelight making his hair look orange from where Blake sat. Silently, Blake wondered what he'd look like in orange hair. "Who?"
"The Beatles." Blake rolled his eyes. "Cam and Em, of course. Who else would I be talking about?"
"Should we go check on them?" Cate asked.
"Not unless you want to be a cockblocking SOB," Allison said. Cate made a face as the image of her brother doing that flashed in her mind without permission.
Asher grimaced at his sister. "Who in their right mind would fuck anyone under that storm?"
"Just the right amount of insane and horny would do it," Ian sipped on his hot chocolate, ignoring the jealous looks he was getting because no, Bryce did not have the courtesy to make one for everyone. "I'd know."
To their surprise, Asher laughed. "You're kidding."
"It's one of those things you have to experience to fully understand it, Asher," Bryce replied.
Asher leaned back into his seat. "No thanks," he said. "Could you even hear anything?"
Suddenly the room was filled with a chorus of ooh's, their collective breaths threatening to put out the candle completely. Blake's eyes sparkled with curiosity, and Asher knew instantly that he was about to regret even opening his mouth.
"So you're saying storm sex irks you not because it's inconvenient but because you wouldn't hear anything?" Blake teased, and Asher didn't like the way everyone was egging him on.
"I wasn't–"
"Didn't know you had a thing for sex noises, Sanders," Bryce needled, and his boyfriend laughed while Allison was losing breath beside them.
"I am so conflicted right now," Allison wheezed.
Asher sank into his seat. "You guys just love twisting my words, don't you?"
Blake cooed. "Aw, are you angry?"
"Shut up."
"You kind of give us no choice when you react like that," Blake added, and everyone agreed. He glanced back at Asher, who looked liked he was neither happy or listening. "Okay, fine we'll stop. What were we talking about again?"
"Cameron and Emery," Ian answered. Setting his empty cup on the table, he looked outside the window, concern lacing his voice when he couldn't see anything but darkness. "They are taking a long time out there. I'm calling Em."
