"I've already made it abundantly clear that we will not be entertaining any deals," Derek's lawyer asserts, her voice brimming with unwavering determination. "We are more than prepared to take our chances in court and expose the deep-rooted corruption within the Seattle Police. Given the gravity of Meredith's lawsuit, do you genuinely believe that a jury would lend any credibility to the prosecution's claims?"
Isabella, the prosecutor assigned to the case, responds calmly, her tone measured and composed. "Meredith's lawsuit and your defense are two separate matters. She is suing due to the mishandling of the police investigation, while you are asserting that your client was framed. The public outcry we have witnessed suggests that the jury will be receptive to our arguments, as they too seek justice for Meredith."
Derek, visibly frustrated, bounces his leg impatiently. "I'm sorry, but don't I have a say in this?" he exclaims angrily, his hand forcefully slamming against the table. "I couldn't care less if I spend the rest of my life behind bars, as long as I'm still breathing! Florida is pushing for the death penalty. This deal could potentially save my life, but you're too fixated on this 'I was framed' nonsense! I wasn't framed. I may be proud of what I did, but not proud enough to die for it."
"Derek, I genuinely have your best interests at heart," his lawyer responds, her voice filled with empathy and understanding. "Do you truly want to be convicted of murder and kidnapping, spending the remainder of your life in prison, all for the slim chance that Florida secures a conviction in their case? They only have you in their crosshairs because of the DNA evidence discovered by the Seattle Police. If we secure an innocent verdict here, Florida may even drop their case altogether."
Derek's anger begins to subside, replaced by a flicker of uncertainty. He contemplates her words, slowly realizing the gravity of the situation. The weight of his decisions hangs heavily in the air. "Consider the consequences, Derek. Think about the impact this could have on your life. We have a chance to fight for your freedom, to expose any wrongdoing, and to ensure that justice is served. It's undoubtedly a risk, but it's a risk worth taking."
"Your client should be aware that Florida is moving swiftly; they want him, and they want him now. We may not even get the opportunity to try him for his Washington crimes. This deal is the only guarantee I can offer you that he won't be extradited for a speedy trial in Florida. I'm only making this offer once, and if you turn it down now, I won't come back," Isabella explains, folding her hands in front of her on the table.
Derek's gaze shifts from his lawyer to Isabella, his mind racing with conflicting thoughts. The room falls into a heavy silence as he grapples with the magnitude of the choices before him. It's his life on the line, and he must decide if he's truly willing to gamble with it. "How certain are you that you can keep me in Washington if I accept the deal?"
"Derek," his lawyer starts, only for an enraged Derek to cut her off.
"No! I am done listening to you! Now I want to hear her out."
"Meredith's lawsuit has sparked a great deal of outrage. People want to see you held accountable for what you did to her, more than they want to see you dead. I have already been in contact with Florida, and as much as they want to administer a lethal injection, they sympathize with the injustices that Meredith has endured. They are willing to drop the extradition petition if you accept a plea of life imprisonment here in Washington," Isabella explains.
"Get me that agreement in writing, and you have a deal," Derek says, standing up and catching the guard's attention, signaling his return to his cell. His lawyer sits back in disbelief.
"You better not be bluffing."
"I'm not. I will obtain that agreement from the Florida District Attorney in writing within the next week, and then we can finalize the deal," Isabella states firmly before standing up and leaving the interview room.
