Officers Taylor and Jacobs found themselves perched outside their supervisor's office, a palpable tension hanging in the air, fueling their growing anxiety as they awaited their summons. The weight of uncertainty pressed down on them, casting shadows of doubt and apprehension over their thoughts.

"There's no way they've already wrapped up the investigation, so I highly doubt we're here to face termination," Taylor voiced her wavering thoughts, her words trembling with disbelief, even to her own ears.

"They might have concluded the investigation at the rope incident. Who knows, they could have deemed that a fireable offense and decided not to delve into our actions post the rope mishap," Jacobs replied, her voice tinged with a mix of resignation and sorrow, her thumb nervously picking at a nail, tears threatening to spill over. "If we do get fired, perhaps it's what we deserve. Frankly, even if they don't let me go, I feel like I've reached my limit."

"What are you saying?" Taylor turned to Jacobs, her eyes widening with concern. "Yes, we made a mistake, but you're an exceptional police officer with over two decades of service. You can't allow one misstep to overshadow your entire career."

"Maybe I was exceptional, but I fear I'm losing my edge. Twenty-two years on the force, about to hit forty-five, perhaps this is a sign that it's time for a change," Jacobs confided wearily, a heavy sigh punctuating her words. "And let's not forget, that one mistake wasn't trivial. We neglected to test a crucial piece of evidence and then lied about it. When I graduated from the academy, I made a vow to myself that the day it became more about closing cases than seeking justice, I'd retire. I believe our failure to test that rope signifies that this day has arrived."

Their conversation ebbed into a heavy silence, the weight of their predicament settling around them like a suffocating shroud. Uncertainty loomed large, casting a shadow over their once unwavering dedication to the badge. The minutes ticked by, each second stretching into an eternity as they braced themselves for the inevitable meeting that would determine the course of their professional lives. The air crackled with unspoken fears and unvoiced hopes, a silent storm brewing within the confines of that hallway outside their supervisor's office.

"Taylor, Jacobs, my office," their supervisor called out, his voice firm yet carrying a hint of disappointment. With a swift glance outside the door, he retreated to his desk, prompting the officers to stand up and make their way inside. Taking their seats opposite his desk, they braced themselves for what was to come.

"It's been two weeks since your suspension began, and though the investigation is ongoing, the board has reached a decision based on your actions during the Shepherd case."
Jacobs let out a resigned sigh, seemingly already anticipating the outcome. "We're fired, aren't we?" she asked, her voice heavy with defeat.

The supervisor leaned forward, his expression a mix of regret and reprimand. "The two of you were once the shining stars of this unit. However, your decision to not test that rope was a grave misjudgment. What's more troubling is the attempt to conceal the truth. You're not terminated, but you will be reassigned to traffic duty, at least for the foreseeable future," he clarified.

Their supervisor's words hung in the air, the weight of the demotion settling in. Taylor and Jacobs exchanged glances, acknowledging the severity of the situation. While relieved to still have a job, the blow of the demotion to a less prestigious role was a hard pill to swallow. The room fell silent, the consequences of their actions now a reality they had to face each day on the job.

"We acknowledge that we have a substantial amount of trust to regain, and we are fully committed to the process of rebuilding it. I believe your influence played a significant role in persuading the board not to terminate our employment, and for that, I am sincerely grateful," Taylor expressed as she rose from her seat, her gaze fixed on Jacobs, who remained seated.
