Ch. 1

Emily is already on the plane, looking out the window, when Hotch enters. He looks at her with suspicion, for he was thinking he would be alone for a while before anyone from the team arrived.

He sits opposite to Emily and looks at her, observing, waiting. She finally looks back at him, fighting back tears: "I'm having a bad day.", she says with a broken voice, as a silent tear leaves a trace across her marble complexion.

Hotch smiles, compassionately, and nods.

She looks back out the window because she does not really want to talk. She does not even know what to say, or how to explain what she is feeling. This last case has taken a toll on her. It was a reminder of her trauma, making her jump right back to the dark places of her mind that she has been trying to avoid, since getting back from Paris. Emily knows she has been deflecting. Trying very hard to get back the trust of her chosen family, while not dealing with the fact that she is back in the US. She had a lot of time, alone in Paris, to deal with her feelings and her failings. However, she still feels haunted.

To make matters worse, she and JJ areright back where they left it off before JJ went to work for the State Department.

The distance was good for them then; they were able to just pretend and go back to being just friends. Now, it is a completely different situation, because they are back to sharing hotel rooms and spending an insurmountable number of hours together. She shouldn't let JJ have this hold on her, but she does, because she loves JJ with all her heart. It does not matter who else comes along for the ride, everything leads her back to JJ. And it is not fair, because JJ is with Will. So why did she let JJ come to her last night?

*A few hours ago*

Emily is getting ready for bed: she has brushed her teeth, put on her comfortable t-shirt and shorts, that she uses for sleep, and has her book ready on the nightstand, when she hears a knock on the door of the small hotel room.

She looks at the clock. It is late, so it must be important. She checks her cell phone, but has not missed any calls or texts.

"I wonder who it is...", she comments as she walks towards the door.

JJ is resting her shoulder against the frame of the door, and smiles at Emily, as the door opens.

"Hey..." JJ says, in a low voice. Emily smiles back, but is suddenly confused. They haven't really been alone like this since she has been back. In all fairness both have been avoiding any situation where they can be alone.

"Hey!", Emily's deep voice comes out sharper than she intended.

"May I come in?" JJ asks, unsure of what the answer will be. Emily gasps and looks up, opening her mouth to speak, but deciding against it. She steps back, making room for JJ to enter the room.
