After Frollo broke into the cathedral with the sword that he took from a guard earlier the archdeacon ran up to him, attempted to stop him from going any further.
"Frollo, have you gone mad?! I will not tolerate this assault on the house of God!" he cried out, purposely standing in the minister's way, trying to prevent him from getting by.
"Silence, you old fool! The hunchback, that girl, and I have unfinished business to attend to. And this time, you will not interfere!" he snapped as he shoved the archdeacon to the ground, causing him the fall partially down the spiral stairs.
He then closed the door and locked it from the inside and stormed up the spiral staircase. Up in the bell tower, Quasimodo and Isabelle burst into the bedroom jubilantly.
"We've done it, Esmeralda! We've beaten them back! Come and see!" he exclaimed happily, only Esmeralda didn't move.
"Esmeralda? Wake up! You're safe now," he said.
"Um, Quasi?" Isabelle said to him grimly. He paused, but still nothing.
"Esmeralda? Oh, no!" he then said in realization that she could very well be deceased now.
He got a spoonful of water, and tried to make her drink it while Isabelle head her head up. She didn't do so.
"Oh, no," they both gasped in horror, thinking that their worst nightmare had came true. He and Isabelle both began to cry and held each other.
"She was one of the only friends I ever had," the grieving young woman said, while still sobbing. During this time Frollo entered the room, while holding a dagger behind his back, and touched Quasimodo on his hump.
"You killed her," he whispered angerly, while Isabelle continued crying.
"It was my duty, horrible as it was. I hope you two can forgive me. There, there, Quasimodo, Isabelle, I know it hurts. But now, the time has come to end both of your suffering, forever," Frollo said as he held up the dagger, ready to stab both of his adopted children to death. Luckily, Isabelle managed to look up just in time.
