Something I want to add in is Emma has hearing loss from the Battle of Monmouth  in the American Revolution, where she was next to canon fire for several hours. Her hearing is still significantly better than a human's, but it's no longer sharp where she can only hear things in her immediate area (as opposed to hearing movement miles away), and she can't detect things close by if there's louder sound.

She's more dependent on her sight. 

I might look back on past chapters to look out for contradicting but I think it's a good impediment she has from the war and one she's guilty about.
