With her sword, Emma took the trail from her house to the hill with the standing stones where Vance reunited with his sires. "Emma!" She stopped and turned around at Maria catching up to her. "Emma I'm sorry!" She apologized. "I didn't mean to upset you. I thought you deserved to know the truth."
"It's okay." Emma reassured her. "You are right and I appreciate you telling me. Sometimes the truth hurts, though I doubt this is the full truth.
Maria opened her mouth in protest, but Emma quickly interjected. "Something similar happened in the Colonies during the beginning of the rebellion. In Boston, protesters provoked the King's soldiers into opening fire on them. The press called it a massacre, and made it out as if the soldiers gunned down innocent people who merely spoke in opposition. I believe that's what happened with Lafayette and his troops."
"Provoked or not he still shot them." Maria replied.
"True." Emma shrugged, shaking her head dismissively. How are you gonna get yourself out of this mess, my old friend?
Maria followed her up the hill, into the center of the standing stones. Both felt the sublime aura within the space, and Emma knew it would be the right spot; away from the town brimming with divine magic she could tap into. "What are you doing?" Maria watched Emma trace a circle around the stones, tracing connecting eyes and clawing the arcane symbol of protection in the stones with her claws.
"Giving you an ideal place for your meetings."
Maria nearly cried in joy. "You do care."
"I care about keeping you safe." Emma sat against a taller stone, gazing out onto the region and the hill of the town. "And I believe in the reasons you fight for. I just can't fight for them myself. Not again, after everything that's happened."
She held out the lanyard with Caleb's engagement ring. "After everything I've lost."
