Cambridge, Massachusetts

September, 1775

Emma never expected to return to Boston again, certainly not when it was under siege! War had come, the colonial rebels had now formed their own army and caused quite the ruckus to the British forces. The newspapers and the Miracle Makers kept her in the know, and she had followed her brethren's lead and stayed out of the war effort. She did her part in hunting marauding vampires, earning good cash and a reputation in Philadelphia. That was her contribution to the cause, she felt no inclination to involve herself further, especially with Caleb in the picture.

Fate, it seems, had other plans.

At first she believed the letter a forgery, a trap laid by the loyalist vampires to kill her or lure her out of Philly. A letter, written by the General himself requesting her aid as a Night Guard in his army at the encouragement of his loyal confidant, that young boisterous Frenchman she saved from becoming a late night dinner two months ago. She nearly threw the letter into the fire, but Caleb convinced her otherwise.

She didn't respond, and for two months nothing came of it, enough time to assume the letter was indeed a forgery until another one arrived from the hands of Lafayette himself. Emma never believed she'd see him again, let alone as Washington's own damn protege! He pleaded for her to join the army, the general desperately needed a Night Hunter to stop the predation of his troops.

"Doesn't the general have hunters in his army?" Emma questioned.

"None as skilled as you." Lafayette said. "Please. I beg of you, join us. The Maurading vampires are preying on our men like wolves among sheep. If they continue we will lose our troops to death and desertion. You could be the key between victory and defeat."

Of course, Caleb had to chime in and further encourage him.

Emma relented, agreeing to travel to Boston just to see what it all meant. Caleb accompanied her, eager to join the fight and to remain with his lady. "We shall see." Emma warned him. Whatever happened, it would be quite the story to tell.

Emma's heart sunk seeing the state of Boston during the siege, she hoped her comrades were well, but she had more urgent matters at hand. The carriage brought them to the home of a former plantation owner, its Loyalist family fled from the oncoming war. Now it was the headquarters of the general. Emma was escorted to the war room, and as the doors closed behind her she found herself in a private audience with General Washington himself.
