part of the next chapter I'm working on.

Emma took a sleeping draft that night, yet she still dreamed.

She dreamed of Yorktown under a moonless night, fighting for the first time in the war alongside her fellow soldiers. They had taken the British by ambush and amidst the gunshots and cannon fire, Caleb screamed her name.

"Caleb!!!" She bellowed, trying to find him amidst the flurry of fire and smoke.

"Emma !!" She heard him. "The vampires are after the General! You have to stop them!! You're the only one who can reach him in time!!!"

"I won't leave you!!!!"

"You have to go, he needs you!! I will be fine!!"

"You won't! If I save him....you'll die." She did what she should have done, she stormed through the fray and searched for Caleb, slicing down shadowed enemies to defend him. "CALEB!!" Smoke blinded her and she lost him. "CALEB!!!!

A shadowed figure passed through "Little Dove."

Emma blinked in disbelief. "Father?"

Alucard stepped into view. "Emmaline, you cannot change what has already happened."

"I can this time!" Emma said defiantly.

"It is past." Her father responded softly. "This is only a dream." The scene faded, and she found herself by the lake in Machecoul. Emma collapsed to the ground crying.

"My dearest one..." Alucard took her in her arms. Emma huddled into her father, burying her head into his chest. "You don't have to do this." Alucard stroked her hair. "Maria will not be undefended. Richter Belmont will protect her, and your wards are strong. She will understand."

"I can't Father." Emma shuddered. "I can't turn away knowing Maria is at risk. She's my bloodline and the legacy of my children. I wouldn't do this for anyone else."

"I understand." Alucard closed his eyes, Maria was his legacy too. "Keep her safe, but look after yourself, my daughter. Her well being shouldn't come at the cost of yours."

"I will." Emma promised. "It feels right." Emma said with clarity. "Deep in my soul, I know it's the right thing to do. I have always protected our family."

Her father smiled proudly at her as he vanished from her dream. "Let your dreams be peaceful." He kissed her cheek. The scene shifted again and she stood beneath the stars, the flickering of the soldiers encampment not far off. As she stood watch, she turned her head at the footsteps approaching her. "I though you might enjoy some company."

Emma was thankfully he couldn't see her blush in the darkness. "I would, but not at the cost of your rest."

"I've rested well enough, and I can barely sleep a wink." Caleb stood beside her. "Do you mind, my dear? I promise not to distract you."

"Not at all." Emma chuckled, continuing her watch. He stood next to her, mere inches from her. She felt the warmth as she took his hand. "You need not worry about me. I'm used to these long nights alone, and you are the best company." Emma chuckled. "Better than the last person who insisted he'd stand guard and protect my honor from the men who suspected me."

Caleb squeezed her hand angrily. "If that bastard orphan son-of-a-whore dared to disturb you-."

"Hey! Knock that off." Emma warned. "He's harmless. And it's not like he could get anywhere with me. I've already chosen my suitor and it's you."

Caleb lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it.

Emma knew she was dreaming, else she wouldn't have taken Caleb under the midnight watch and kissed him under the stars. He melted into her, held onto her, and Emma wished the dream lasted forever.
