Solis: City of Lights
Chapter 1 Sapphire
There is is. The famous ember, the source of all. Right here, in all its blazing glory. It's beauty was more than I could've ever imagined, much more than all the legends explained about it. The smoothness of the stone, the shine as the spotlight hit it just right, the bright flames as they danced against its surface. And I was one of the few in this world that had the pleasure of witnessing it in person... ... not that I was here legally, HAH! For something so important, it sure needs better guards if someone like little ol' me can bypass its gates. Pathetic! Even the metal walls couldn't stop the great Sapphire, master of stealth! Or so the Wanted posters say. But no time to waste, I thought to myself as I ran closer to the glass. They could be here at any moment. The camera sat in my pocket, a thin little stick one could easily hide away. Latest model, too. It was easy to open, one simply had to break the stick in two like a chocolate bar, and the transparent blue screen would show up like magic. I didn't have much stuff from this company, but whatever I managed to get my hands on, I guarded with my life. With a few quick snaps, the pictures had been taken, and the camera back in my pocket like it had never left. Hopefully they didn't look shaky, with my hoodie covering part of my eyes; but I had to cover my face somehow. Hear that, Sapphire? I asked myself as I headed back to the open window. That's the sweet, sweet sound of sparks falling into my fat pockets! I can't wait to get home and- The thought paused in my head. Had I heard something? Psh, no, what could I have heard? There was no one around. The walls were soundproof out of fear that a loud bang could shatter the glass that protected the ember, the only thing being heard was the quiet chewing of my bubblegum. So then, why did I find myself walking back to the glistening blues of the stone? One step, two steps, three, I couldn't stop. I had to be there. I had to see it. It was... so beautiful... But the blaring alarms sent me back to reality, seeing my hand now touching the glass. Shoot, how could I have been so stupid?! "Freeze!" Behind me, I heard the rapid footsteps of heavy boots, many boots, and the clicking of the guns activating. "Hands in the air!" I did as told, my hands pressed against the back of my head, when a realization struck. I knew that voice, and smiled to myself. "That you, Jason?" One of the boots, once silent, shifted and squeaked as the rubber hit the metal. I knew the best game for me to play at this point was compliance; that, or hiding my identity as long as possible. But their was no point in that anymore, even with the voice changer I had under my mask. He knew who I was too well, they all did. Might as well have a little fun. "Turn around. Slowly," Jason said, his voice deep and demanding obedience. And I did, each step I took slow as to not cause any extra tension. "Take off the hood and mask," he then said. Again, I did, the smile never leaving my face. "Howdy, stranger." "Sapphire Cyrus," he confirmed to the rest, though I knew my face was of no surprise to him. "I knew you were crazy, but this?" "No rest for the wicked, right?" "Grab her." He gestured to me with his head, and two guards, one on each of his sides, cautiously walked over to me. I didn't move, not an inch. I didn't even chew the gum that had started to grew stale in my mouth. But I did fidget with my feet just ever so slightly, seeming nervous. "Just please go easy on me, okay, fellas...?" "Don't pull that shit." Jason's scowl only grew. "They know how dangerous you are. You're going to be in prison for a long time." "That is, if you catch me first." Just as the words left my mouth, I spit my gum out, letting it explode into a thick cloud of smoke. Just as fast, I heard the guns shoot. Loud. Quick. But I'm quicker. I ducked, my chest hitting the floor as I crawled out of the way, retracing my footsteps back to where I came in from; the ceiling. I'm a professional, after all. Clicking my heels together activated the jets under my boots, giving me just the right amount of impulse I needed to leap and grab the edge of the opened ceiling panel, climbing in just as the mist cleared, and seeing Jason's beautifully angered face as I closed the panel. Point for me, I celebrated in my head before feeling the inside of my pocket. My camera was still there, intact. Perfect! Now I could make my grand escape.
I inverted the steps I have previously taken. One: leave the empty area between the inner and outer ceiling, with a mental note to watch out for wires. Two: get back to the hallway, stay away from the cameras, and find the window you came in from. Three: take a leap of faith. Piece of cake. The first step was the easiest, it's not like anyone ever entered this section of the building, let alone the part where all the extra wires were stashed away from the public. The second was a little more tricky, but nothing I couldn't handle. There were more guards now than when I came in, but that was to be expected when I so stupidly made my location known. Still, they were so focused on the main ember room doors than they left the windows wide open for me, letting my climb out into the lower roof with ease. Then came the leap of faith. The building where the ember was stored and protected was a skyscraper, the tallest one built in Lux City. Or better yet, in all of Solis. Climbing the side of it had been easy enough with my boots and gloves, but jumping down was another adventure all on its own, and there was no way I could just take the stairs inside. But the building next to me had a fire escape on the side. Sure, it was a big jump, but with the rockets built into my shoes, I could make it as long as I got the momentum right. You can't die now, I told myself for motivation. Not in such a lame way. So I held the side of my boot to set a timer. Five seconds, make it count. I wound myself up, hyping myself so that the fear that started to gurgle stayed deep inside and didn't affect my movements, and ran forward as fast as I could. Three... two... I had to bite my lip so I wouldn't scream as the thrusters raised my feet higher than my body expected. For just a moment, my anxiety got the best of me, and it seemed like I was just a centimeter too far. But I still had my trusty gloves on, and they stuck to the wall so nicely it tickled my brain after silently celebrating I was still alive, glancing over my shoulder to make sure no one was there to watch as I carried myself over to the fire escape. Pretty much skipping the entire way down, now with my hoodie and mask back on, I smiled to myself, knowing the rest would be a walk in the park. The guards might've been familiar with my general look, but Lux sure as hell wasn't. In fact, no one even seemed to find it strange that I had my face hidden; if anything, they'd judge me for not having a flashy one. That's just how Lux City worked. So instead, I simply took out my C-Pad and put on the kingdom map. Solis, this kingdom -if you'd even want to call it that-, is divided in three: Lux City, the town of Orien, and the Umbra zone, each divided by a thick river that went in a circle, just like the kingdom itself. Manmade, of course. Lux City was the most expensive one to live in, standing in the very center of the kingdom. The people here tend to have too many sparks to use in their lifetime, and most like to brag about it right in your face. I don't mess with them, not usually. I don't like to mess with that crowd. Today was just an expedition, a good one.
Sooooo this is a fraction of the first chapter, just a little taste! And a first draft, so sorry if it's filled with typos and it might not make total sense 😭
But I am pretty much done with chapter 1 (chapters are gonna be long cuz they're divided into different perspectives, shifting between Sapphire, Santi, and Grace)
