Lucy's POV
I woke up the next morning in so much pain and felt so gross. I got in the shower and did it as quickly as i could. I scrambled on my uniform and blow dried my hair. Every single time i move im in so much pain. every muscle, every single inch of my body hurts so bad. Luke opened the bathroom door and just watched me as i did my hair. I put it in a braided bun today. I kissed him goodbye before running out the door. I got in my car and drove to the station. I saw Tim outside of roll call.
Lucy: Hey!
Tim: Hey, what's up?
Lucy: you aren't in the break room today
Tim: do you see the time?
Lucy: shit! why didn't you tell me i was late?
Tim: because you're not
Lucy: yes i am, roll call started 10 minutes ago! where even is everyone?! was it already dismissed?!
Tim: stop spiraling and let me finish!
Lucy: sorry
Tim: roll call won't be for another 30 minutes today, we're supposed to patrol for a little bit
Lucy: oh thank God
Tim: and today, i'll let you drive
he tossed me the keys and i caught them
Lucy: are-are you being serious?! thank you so much!
Tim: don't make me regret it
Lucy: right, sorry. but why?
Tim: i figured i'd give you a small break. so, they let you back already after a surgery.
Lucy: i'm getting it today after shift, i'm allowed to work for now, just no food or water today before the surgery
Tim: are you sure Lucy?
Lucy: Tim i'll be fine, i'm leaving early for it today, and if everything goes well, i'll be back tomorrow
Tim: really?
Lucy: yeah i know, it'll be laparoscopic so it'll heal better and quicker
Tim: okay, let's hit the road
we headed to the shop and i started driving around and patrolling. we got a call and responded, we ended up getting in a car chase. i was about to PIT the guy when another car flew in from nowhere. i swerved to avoid it.
Tim: not so bad
Lucy: i know how to drive a car-
Tim: look out!
all of a sudden another car came speeding at us so i swerved really hard to avoid it and before i knew it the shop flipped upside down.
Tim: Lucy? you okay?!
Lucy: yeah i'm fine! are you?
Tim: that work out how you planned it, Boot?
Lucy: no, sir
i said a bit annoyed. even in a car crash he's still got all the attitude on the world. we managed to get out of the shop. i saw the shop completely upside down in the road, smoking from the bottom, or really the roof.
Tim: great work boot
he said while walking away
Lucy: where are you going!?
Tim: i'm not trying to be associated with you right now
Lucy: wh-uh, well you can't just leave!
Tim: I can, and I am
Lucy: my radio was crushed in there, you have to call it in
Tim: you're lying
Lucy: no i'm not
Tim: perfect, first car chase and my rookie flips the shop upside down!
Lucy: all respect sir, i didn't want to, okay, the car came out of nowhere
Tim: whatever
he picked up his radio and called in the crash. a tow truck came and took the shop. angela and jackson came to pick us up. he seemed so angry, angela didn't even bother to make jokes, she could tell he was not having it. he made me and jackson sit in the back but let Angela continue to drive. i didn't realize i had a cut lip and bloody nose until Tim pointed it out at the station.
Tim: you've got a little something
he pointed to my nose, i wiped it and saw the blood
Lucy: shoot, i'll be right back
Tim: roll call in 10!
Lucy: okay
i shouted back at him as i rushed to the bathroom. i wiped up my nose and lip before heading to roll call. Tim and i had already been checked out by paramedics. i rushed to roll call and joined nolan and jackson in conversation. angela, and bishop were there.Tim's POV
I don't want to be so mean to Lucy, i'm just ina. bad mood i guess, from Rachel yesterday, Lucy is probably lying to me about her surgery, but i really hope she isn't. I didn't realize how rude i'd been until i overheard Lucy talking to john. she heard the word arrogant and boom, immediately assumed it was about me.Lucy's POV
John: I've never seen him like that. He's usually so confident, so self-assured, so -
Talia: arrogant
Lucy: who, Tim?
Talia: no, Hawke
John: You know he's living in a motel now?
Talia: That's what happens when you try to be big policeman at home. You end up on the couch. Tim rode with Hawke back in the day.
So that's who they were talking about, Hawke, the bar owner
Tim appeared from thin air
Tim: Damn straight. Craziest six months of my life
Talia: Hmm. Nolan hung out with him last night
Tim: Hawke and Nolan?
Lucy: Oh, yeah. They were tight at the Academy. They bonded over their shared love of old stuff.
John: the beastie boys isn't old!
Lucy: They formed before I was born.
Grey: All right, everyone take a seat. Got some catching up to do. Let's go. First, let's congratulate Officer Chen for allowing her T.O. to finish his coffee before rolling their vehicle.
the other officers laughed, i couldn't help but sit a little bit more down in my seat. i didn't bother to look at Tim, i could tell he would just get more upset.
Grey: I see "training" is working out for you. All right, more pressingly, midnight shift was flooded with calls last night, and they left us with their mess. Let's get started. Our detectives are working a homicide in Larchmont Village, but there are witnesses that still need to be interviewed. Bishop and Nolan, you'll take that. And Burglary has got a search warrant that Patrol didn't get around to. Bradford and Chen, you'll take that.
Tim: Come on, why can't Burglary serve their own damn warrants?
Grey: Because they don't have the vim and vigor you have, Officer Bradford. This is yours. All the faces. Don't worry. I have pending calls for everybody! All right, let's go knock 'em out and show the late shift how real police work is done.
we got up and i walked towards the war bags. I grabbed them and Tim walked with me to the shop. we drove to the first place.
Tim: All right, we're serving a search warrant. You see door hinges?
Lucy: Uh, the door opens outwards towards us.
Tim: and what's a "fatal funeral"?
Lucy: The first three feet in any doorway.
Tim: Not bad. Here's the real test. Of all the things Burglary told us about our suspect LeShawn Halvorsen, what's most important?
Lucy: Uh, history of fighting with police.
Tim: Wrong. This guy's been served seven search warrants, spent half his life on parole
Lucy: Uh, I'm sorry. I'm not sure I follow.
Tim: He's been searched a lot. He knows what doesn't work, so to find his stash, you'll have to think like a crook. Can you do that?
Lucy: Of course. You don't think I can?
Tim: I think you were raised to analyze bad guys, not be one, and to be a great cop, you got to have a little outlaw in you. Hinges?
Lucy: On the inside
Tim pulled out his gun and had it pointed to the ground. He pounded on the door.
Tim: Police. Open up, LeShawn.
Lucy: What's an acceptable amount of time to wait before we bust in?
before he answered, Tim kicked in the door. The man was behind the door, knocked out.
Tim: that had to hurt. Go search around
I found a bag on the floor and bent over and started going through it. The criminal woke up
Criminal: Yo, lady cop, you can search my place all day.
I turned around in disgust but Tim already walked over to him and slapped the back of his head.
Tim: Get up. Face the wall before I snatch the other eye out of your head. You need to learn some respect.
I gave him a thank you nod
Tim: Okay, come on, Officer Chen. Think like a crook. When's the last time you hid anything under a couch, 8th grade?
Lucy: You know how many times I couldn't find my phone and it was under the couch the whole time?
Tim: This isn't that. You ever heard of the DEAR method? D-E-A-R?
Lucy: no
Tim: There are four principles of concealment. First is deception, "D." Deception shows you one thing when it's really something else.
He walked over to the fridge and opened it up. He took out a soda can and unscrews the top of the can to show that it's a hiding place. It was empty inside.
Tim: "E" is for "elusive." What appears to be nothing is actually something.
He walked over to a vent and tore off the cover, there was an empty canister in it.
Tim: "A" for "access." Things hard to get to, high places, low places.
He grabbed a light bulb from the ceiling light and tossed it to me. above it was a big chunk of cash, he also threw that to me and screwed the light back in.
Tim: Which brings us to "R." "R" is for "repulsive." Toilets, garbage, porn collection, anything that makes you want to puke makes a crook want to hide things there.
Lucy: You've got to be kidding me.
Tim: Might want to glove up. Saw a box of sex toys in the master bedroom, and don't forget the toilet. Search before you flush.
Lucy: Wait. Uh, why do I have to be "R"? I don't I don't want to be "R." I could be "elusive" or "deceptive" or something.
Tim: too late, get looking
i put on gloves and started looking in all the nasty places, it was disgusting. I went to the bedroom next. Nothing. I headed out and saw Tim sitting at a table full of stolen objects.
Lucy: what the hell?!
Tim: what?
Lucy: I've been back there for 20 minutes digging through Caligula's toy chest, and you've had this the whole time?
Tim: Well, not the whole time. It took me three or four minutes.
Lucy: mm
i nodded my head at him full of anger
Tim: find anything?
Lucy: Uh, yeah. Horrid, filthy things.
Tim: well, we're done here, let's go.
I carefully took off my gloves and placed them down.
Tim: might want to wash your hands
I scoffed and picked up the dirty gloves throwing them at him
Tim: that is disgusting!
Lucy: now you know how i feel
we grabbed the criminal and shoved him in the back of the shop. Tim and I booked him for violating his parole and i scrubbed from my elbows to my finger tips in the bathroom sink. then i washed my face and headed back out to tim. he also washed his hands. we headed back to our shop and saw Hawkes RV. He got a BOLO out on him
Lucy: Dispatch pinged his phone. Shows his location as 10 yards in front of us. 7-Adam-19, show us Code 6 at Riverside and Woodman. No sign of suspect Hawke's vehicle. Check Utah plate 6-Mary-Ocean-1-7-Adam.
Tim: I can't believe we're hunting Jeremy Hawke. Man bleeds LAPD. I was first on scene when the guy was taking .223 rounds using the curb for cover.
We exited the shop and tim headed towards the open RV door
Tim: Hawke? It's Tim. We're gonna get to the bottom of this. Come out. Let's talk.
Man in Camper: Hey. Sorry. No Hawke here. We met back at the motel, though. Did he do something wrong?
Tim: Was he ever inside your vehicle?
Man in Camper: Nope.
Tim walked to the front of the camper and felt under the hood, there was a phone, Hawkes phone.
Tim: He really is running. He knew we'd track his cell, so he planted it on someone going anywhere he's not.
Lucy: He's thinking like a criminal.
Tim: Worse, like a criminal cop. He knows how we do things and what we expect, so he's always a step ahead.
a while passed and we heard Hawkes truck was spotted near us. we soon saw it and began to chase it.
Tim: 7-Adam-19, we are on intercept course with Hawke's truck, three blocks out and closing.
Lucy: Is this safe with Hawke's kid in the car?
Tim: Hawke thinks we've fallen back into tracking mode. He doesn't know we blocked the streets, turned the lights green to funnel him towards us. He won't see the roadblock coming. To him, it looks like we've fallen back.
Lucy: Yeah, but won't all the green lights look suspicious?
Tim: He won't notice. "What appears to be nothing," remember?
Lucy: You're DEAR method incarnate. You've got a tactic for any situation, don't you?
Tim: maybe
Lucy: What if you get robbed at gunpoint?
Tim: Easy, deception. I carry an empty wallet. If I ever got robbed, I'd drop my fake, pull my piece, and good night, nurse.
Lucy: So, where do you keep your cards and money?
Tim: Money clip behind my belt.
Lucy: okay, you're officially weird
we got really close to hawkes truck and were able to keep him near the road block.
Tim: Get ready. It's going down.
he spoke into the radio
Tim: 7-Adam-19, about to intercept. Make sure you block him in.
John over radio: 7-Adam-15, copy. He just did a hard left turn. It's like he knows what we're gonna do.
Tim: The son of a bitch must still have his radio
John: Hawke, I know you can hear me. You need to pull over right now. Hawke?
Hawke: I'm not good at calling it quits, Nolan. You know that. A lot of boys at Pelican Bay can attest to that.
John: so what, you're going to join them?
Hawke: That is never gonna happen.
John: What's your end game here, Hawke? You just gonna escape the pursuit and live happily ever after?
Hawke: Didn't you learn anything in class, Nolan? This is a tactical situation, not a strategic one. Long term isn't about the conversation. The initial obstacle is the pursuit. Once I lose that, just focus on the next step.
John: What about Logan? Are you prepared for something to happen to him?
Hawke: leave my son out of this
Logan: Don't use me against my dad! He said you'd try that and that you'd lie about everything. But it won't work. We're in this together. Whatever happens to him, happens to me.
John: I'm not lying, Logan. Your father is. He's lost control.
Hawke: you're done
Nolan: Logan? Hawke
we officially lost contact with them. Bishop called me and i answered putting her on speaker
Tim: What's his plan?
Talia: We were just trying to figure that out. How would you get away?
Tim: Job number one would be to lose air support. No way to escape the eye in the sky. What about you?
Talia: Go somewhere packed with people. Overwhelm our resources. Switch cars.
Lucy: Does every cop have an escape route?
Talia: most
Tim: Hawke and I worked a car one summer. We were a two-man wrecking crew. Took down some heavy hitters. We talked about how we'd run from the cops because it made us better hunters.
John: Covered parking, tons of people. He's going to the mall.
Talia: we need to get there now.
we hung up the phone and headed to the mall. Tim spoke into the radio.
Tim: Suspect headed to the Fair Street Mall. Need additional units. Code 3.
we arrive at the mall. it's crowded; a lot of cops are moving, trying to secure the area. Hawke and logan split up, we go after hawke first. bishop and nolan are closest to him. we lose him in the crowd and so did john and bishop. we all meet up by grey.
Tim: Make sure it's secure
Grey: Time element since we had a visual?
John: four minutes
Grey: perimeter?
Talia: Thin, but we have units moving in at every exit. We'll have full containment in a few minutes.
Lucy: If I were him, I'd head back to the parking garage and just steal a car, get lost in the stream heading out.
Talia: I'd change clothes, pull the fire alarm, blend in with the fleeing crowd.
Tim: Sewer system. That's the way to go. Dogs can't track him, good current, be in Chinatown in 15 minutes.
Dispatch: All units, be advised, man with a gun at Lowington Financial. Code 3.
Tim: That's six blocks from here.
Grey: Description of the gunman?
Dispatch: No, sir. 911 call cut off before we could get more information
John: That's how I'd do it. Call in a false report. Pulls manpower away, divides our resources, it frees up an exit. That call's not real. That's Hawke
Grey: And if it's not? If the call's real and we don't divert units over immediately, what happens then?
Tim: we'll figure it out, but the chances are in our favor
we all dispersed and started tracking down Hawke. tim and i split up, im closer to bishop and john is closer to tim.
Dispatch: 7-Adam-14, 7-Adam-25, respond to active shooter at Lowington Financial.
