Max was twelve when they found their first familiar, it was during the same year where they had found out Corvus's secret, their birthday was earlier in the year, it happened during a school day and not surprisingly they went on an excursion out of town, and hour away from the glass river which ran through the entire continent, it was named after glass because its water ran straight down from the snowcapped mountains and it somehow managed to stay clean as it travelled to the ocean.
Corvus found it cool that the water running from the mountains was from the sea water that dissolved and rose to the sky, only to be used over and over again, Max found it cool that the water in their bottle could've passed through the dinosaurs.
"Now you keep to yourselves, don't wander off." Father Yamato rambled on as he adjusted Max's collar at the school gates. "Listen to you teacher and you." He pointed a glare at Corvus. "Don't wolf out."
"Don't tell my kid what to do." Mr Constellation snarled before patting his kid on the shoulder. "But seriously don't wolf out."
"That's what I just said!" Father Yamato shrieked, causing the children to laugh at his temper tantrum.
"All-a-bored!" A man wearing a sailor outfit yelled from the yellow bus, the children all looked over to him and rushed over.
"Bye!" Max squealed before latching their arm onto Corvus and running off to the hunk of yellow metal.
The two children stepped onto the rumbling bus and tripped as it jolted and huffed smoke from its pipes, Corvus yelped as he had to catch Max's body.
"All good." Max grunted, grabbing onto the railing, Corvus pushed Max the rest of the way up, his hands resting on their furnace of a back, keeping them from falling.
"Old man Jenkins you can't go around wearing that stupid costume, you were sacked years ago!" A teacher grumbled at the bus driver.
"You can take a man out of the sea, but you can't take the sea out of the man." Old man Jenkins said proudly, his eyes looked like they were permanently closed, and his face was sagged with wrinkles.
As the children rushed to the back of the bus for the best seats, they could faintly hear the teacher say. "That doesn't make sense." In an exasperated tone as he waved his hands around.
Corvus tugged the bag off his back as he and Max sat in the seat whish was one off from the back, it was too much space and there would be a lot of people surrounding them, Corvus hummed and looked over as Max as they pulled a map out of their satchel.
"Alright when we get there, we'll have an hour to ourselves so we can go scurry around the forests, it's bigger than the one we have here!" Max explained.
"Wait, aren't we supposed to stay with the group, Father Yamato said-" Corvus said leaning away from the window he pressed his face against.
"What he doesn't know won't hurt him." Max exclaimed.

It was an hour and a half when the bus stopped, the kids rushed of the bus, living in the feeling of being able to stretch their limbs and run around, a sharp sound cut through the air as the teacher blew his whistle, he clapped his hands twice and the kids copied.
"Alright, everyone, gather up close." The teacher made a pained sound as he kneeled over. "Everyone got their partner, yep, yep." His eyes scanned the crowd. "Alright we have an hour here before we head back, so stay in sight of the river and do not under and circumstance go into the forest." He shuddered as his eyes looked up at the tangling wood for a second.
