Corvus was fifteen when Max left for college.
Not just any college either, one that teaches magic specifically, one that you need exceptional grades for, one that your parents needed to attend so they could make a good impression on whether you and the rest of your bloodline could join.
And Max received a letter from them, accepting them into the entrance exam.
Max spent two whole weeks studying for the practice exam, their mother had gone there and apparently gave a lasting enough impression that Max was sent the exam earlier than anyone else, in doing so giving them less time to prepare and more stress placed on their back.
"Max come hang out with us, it's been an hour!" William groaned hung upside down on the couch.
"If you're bored, then you can leave or put the tv on." Max said as shuffled through papers of the Salem witch trials and Issac Newtons discovery of gravity.
"Bah Humbug!" He spat and grabbed the remote to put on kung foo panda, a new tv had been put in recently to the children's delight.
Max murmured and muttered to themselves as they grabbed another pile of paper and sorted through it, it was about human herbs and their properties-little yes- in the magical world.
William peaked over their shoulder and hesitated before putting the remote down, he looked to the tv and looked to Max, smiling evilly, he turned the volume up and Max's ears flickered down.
"William." Max groaned, covering their ears.
"Sorry, what was that?" William smiled.
"Maybe if you turn the sound down, you'll be able hear me!" Max pulled their ears down.
"What?!" William repeated.
Max hissed at him, tail flaring and left the room. "Aw come on!" William said.
"I really don't know what you thought that was going to achieve." Max said as they slammed the door.
The leaned against the wooden door once closed and muttered "Bah Humbug." Before leaving to a quieter space.

Max got the test the day after that and handed it in straight after completing it, as soon as they ticked the box at the end stating that they had completed it the paper started to burn, and they leaned back in their chair with a yelp as the paper curled like a fern and turned black with green specs of fire.
It turned to ashes and then the ashes disappeared in the air, they did their best to not inhale it as it was sent back to the decider of their fate at the school.
"What just happened?" Carlos asked as he cradled his brother, who had jumped into his arms like Scooby Doo out of fear.
Max dropped their face and covered it in shadow. "They'll decide my fate." The lowered their voice for a more spine-chilling affect.
"Are they gonna kill you?!" William asked.
"What?!" Max squawked, lifting their head. "No, they'll just review my results and determent whether I have good enough grades to go to college-you really thought they kill me for completing a test?!"
There was a pause as all eyes turned to William who had been dropped on the floor by his brother.
"Nooo." He drew out.
"Ohmy-" Max went blank as the being around them started to laugh at the audiblesound of them smacking themselves straight in the face.

"So, when do you think the results will come back." Corvus asked as he spayed out all his limbs on Max's bed.
A lantern flickered where Max sat at their desk drawing, they leaned back as they stretched, bending their neck to look at Corvus without getting up. "Someday soon." They answered. "Maybe in a day or week." It had already been two days since they completed the test.
Corvus patted his chest as Max went back to work, summer holidays were ending soon and soon Max would be leaving.
Maybe they wouldn't, maybe they wouldn't get into the magical college, and they could stay with him.
Call him selfish, but he hoped for it dearly.
Something tapped on the window and Max opened it with a snap of their fingers, they barely took their eyes off their drawing when Phantom hopped into the room and fluttered his wings, silky black feathers flying off him.
"Phantom." Max gasped with a smile after they looked up from their perspective drawing with a ruler, they whistled, and the bird flew over to them.
"Mail's here." Phantom croaked and lifted his leg to show the paper in his talon, Max took it from him gently and the bird hopped onto their shoulder, talons digging into the fabric of their thin coat.
Max twisted the paper to reveal it was in-fact an envelope and they gasped, Corvus sat up and crossed his legs on the bed.
"What is it?" He asked.
"The results." Max laughed as they ripped open the letter and sat back down, murmuring the inscriptions as they devoured line after line.
Max's heart thumped in their ears, they could hear nothing but their blood rushing through veins and the warning bells of their heart beating out of their own skin.
"Dear Max, we are here to inform you that you have been accepted into "Tituba's collage of enchantment'" Max's smiled widened and they squealed.
"Ha!" The ran over to the window and peaked their head out of it. "I just got accepted into college, whooo! Screw all of you!"
"Shut up!" Somone's voice yelled from the darkness.
"Corvus, Corvus." Max chanted. "I got in!" They squealed.
"Oh." Corvus said, he wrung his hands together as he stood alone, bird on the desk, the other familiars on the bed or scurrying around the house.
Max was leaving.
