They knew it was risky.
Stupid.
Dangerous even.
But Max was feeling competitive and wanted to see Corvus being better then all his classmates.
Corvus's class was doing 'show and tell.'
The rest of the coven and pack thought Max was overreacting, Carlos and William obviously didn't, they went along with Max's plan.
In trying to catch a lightning bolt.
Max had seen it being done on tv and since they magical powers they had thought it would be easy and something they could get away with.
They got injured, a lot.

Max, Corvus, Carlos and William stood in a grass field, a half hour away from the manor, it was slightly windy, grey clouds were grasping their long and bony tendrils over the sky, they were greedy, wanting to take over more and more of the blue space.
Max had asked Corvus to keep an eye out for a storm if the weather dudes failed them, he lifted his head and took one sniff at the sky, proclaiming that there was one on the horizon.
"We really don't have to do this." Corvus said, looking up to Max. He held on tightly to a glass jar which was meant to house the lightning bolt in so he could bring it into class, it had a single piece of metal in it but that was about it.
"Shh Corvus!" Carlos barked. "I wanna see this go down." He and his brother were lying against the ground, sprawled out and taking in the scent of a new area.
"Ignore him." Max muttered, turning Corvus's attention back to them. "I simply want you to have the best."
"Try being the best." William snorted.
"Hush now." Max hissed, William stuck his tongue out and Max repeated the action while crossing their arms.
"Max? Max?!" Corvus tugged on Max's sleeve. "Th-storms here-lightning!"
There was a loud bang and blinding light for a split second as the storm had crept up on them. Cracking with volts of electricity, drops of water start to trickle from the sky.
"Uh oh, you've made Zeus mad-ZEUS! We're not with them!" William cupped his hands to yell at the sky.
"Zeus!" Max yelled. "I stand against you and these three are very much with me!"
"Max?!" William squawked.
Electricity hummed in the air and Max turned their attention back to the sky with a hum before immediately jumping out of the way with a yelp as a bolt of light struck the ground in front of them. The ground was infected with a thick black soot.
William was caught in the crossfire between Max and God and the lightning struck him, he screamed as his whole body was lit up for a half off a second, leaving him smoking and ash black. He wobbled, making a strained sound as a whirlpool slurped in more and more water in his eyes until it drained the ocean.
He fell back, smoke and ash exploding off him.
"William-!" Carlos screeched before his brother shot his hand up, landing a punch to his nose as he gave a thumbs up.
"All good." William groaned painfully; his supernatural heritage kept him alive.
Max turned back to the sky with raised fists. "Is that all you've got?!" Their eyes widened as something hurled at them and embedded itself into their stomach.
Max was shot back and dragged across the ground. Their hands grabbed onto something very, very hot, their skin threatened to peel like a fern from under their gloves.
