As the morning sun began to filter through the windows, she silently decided to leave before she could become a burden or put him in any more danger. She moved quietly around the house after freshening up, finding him asleep on the hall couch. Gently opening the main door, she slipped out, her mind racing with thoughts of her lost job and the burnt degree she had earned without them she was nothing.
Entering the lift, she prayed for a safe exit from the city, her heart heavy with the loss of the life she knew. But her thoughts were abruptly interrupted as the lift doors opened on the ground floor to a scene of chaos.
Before she could exit she heard two goons assaulting the security guard.
"Where is she? We know she was here last night! This is her scarf, isn't it?" The goon shouted making her heart tremble in fear
One of the goons waves her scarf, the same one she might have left on the park bench, in front of the terrified security guard.
"You better tell us where she is, or you'll regret it!"one the goon shouted in threatning voice
"We saw her around here. We know she can't be far."
"I don't know who you're talking about! There is no such girl. Please, just leave us alone!" The security guard pleaded
Feeling as if the ground beneath her feet was giving way, she hastily in rush of adrenaline pressed the button for the ninth floor. Her heart raced as the elevator closed. she was consumed with fear and uncertainty. Caught in dilemma of running away from those men and hesitation to return to him filled her thoughts. Not knowing how to go back to him . Asking for place to live again.
But as the doors opened, she was met with a sight that both relieved and startled her—he stood there, tense and confused, running a hand through his hair, his eyes still sleepy.
He looked at her, his eyes widening as he took in her tense and fearful face.
"Where were you going?" he demanded, urgency lacing his voice. Before she could respond, he grabbed her hands and pulled her out of the lift, his grip firm.
As they reached the door, he fumbled slightly with the keys, his hands shaking. Finally, he managed to unlock it, and they stepped inside, the door closing behind them with a soft click. Inside, the apartment felt like a sanctuary compared to the chaos outside. She sank onto the couch, her whole body trembling slightly with adrenaline.
As she sat on the edge of the couch, trying to collect herself, he returned with a glass of water.
She took the glass, her hands trembling slightly, and took a sip before placing it on the side table.
He knelt in front of her, his eyes searching hers with intensity. "Are you hurt? What happened?" he asked urgently unaware of the chaos that had unfolded downstairs.
She turned to him, her expression a mix of fear and disbelief. Her voice trembled as she tried to find the words."There are some people...... they're here for me," she said.
"What people? Who are they?" he asked, confused.
Her words came out in a fearful mumble, barely audible."They're gonna take me away," she whispered.
"Take you away? I don't understand. Who are these people?" he pressed, his confusion deepening.
"You can tell me. Who were those people? Why were they looking for you?" he asked, his confusion deepening.
She hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. Her mind raced, trying to protect him from the danger that had now infiltrated his life.
"I… I can’t… I…" she mumbled, her words barely audible in her fear.
She struggled to speak, her fear palpable. "I can't... I can't tell you everything. But they burned everything I had. They were the one I am running from. They want me back."
"Hey, it's okay. You don't need to tell me everything if you don't want to. But please don't leave again. You're safe here," he reassured her, his voice steady and calming.
She looked at him, tears welling up in her eyes. The weight of her ordeal hung heavy in the air between them.
"You can stay here as long as you need to. We'll figure this out together," he promised.
She nodded slowly, grateful for his reassurance amidst the turmoil.
____________________________________One day had passed since the incident, and she found herself constantly on edge, her mind repeatedly drifting to thoughts of leaving again. Despite his assurances, the fear of being discovered loomed at her. She spent most of her time in the small spare room, trying to keep herself occupied but unable to shake the feeling of impending danger.
One afternoon, she was lost in thought when he suddenly burst into the room, his expression urgent. He held up his phone, showing her something on the screen.
"Look at this," he said, his voice tight with concern.
She took the phone from him, her heart sinking as she saw her own face on the screen. It was a news article, accompanied by a photo of the man who had bought her, the man who had ruined her life. The headline read: "Fiancée Runs Away with Money and Jewelry."
Her stomach churned with anger and disbelief. "I can't believe he would stoop this low," she muttered, her hands trembling.
He watched her closely, his eyes searching her face. "Is it true? Were you really his fiancée?"
She looked up at him, her eyes wide with desperation. "No! Please, you have to believe me. I'm not his fiancée. I never was. Please, don't call him. " The news article mentioned his contact details asking anyone who has seen her to call, mentioning a price money for informer.
He took a deep breath, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Hey, calm down. It doesn't matter to me if you were or weren't his fiancée. You have the right to marry or not marry anyone you choose. He can't force you, and I certainly won't let him."
Tears welled up in her eyes as she nodded, her relief palpable. "Thank you... Thank you for believing me".
He gave her a small, comforting smile. "Try not to think about it too much. We'll figure this out."
She gave him a grateful smile, feeling a bit more assured. "I know. Thank you."
